Ready to kickstart an exciting career in Engineering Design? On our 4-year programme, you’ll work on cutting-edge technology across exciting naval projects, learning on the job while studying towards a full BEng degree.

About the programme

Your apprenticeship will combine classroom learning with direct experience on shipbuilding and ship maintenance projects, such as the Type 31 frigate and Queen Elizabeth Class carrier maintenance.

During the programme, you'll specialise in either Power Engineering or Control and Instrumentation, working as part of a skilled engineering team that ensures our products perform to the highest standards through testing and trial equipment.

You'll learn from experienced and supportive colleagues eager to share their expertise in areas like fault finding and analysis, systems integration, planning and scheduling, continuous improvement, and data analytics.

Through the programme, you will:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of marine engineering fundamentals, regulatory standards, and commissioning procedures for control and automation systems, electrical and mechanical systems, health and safety practices, and project management.
  • Build skills in problem-solving, technical analysis, testing and validation, communication, tool and software usage, collaboration, and documentation.
  • Develop the behaviours essential for becoming a professional engineer, including professionalism, adaptability, resilience, safety consciousness, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Your education/training

You will study for the BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design & Manufacture through Glasgow Caledonian University.

Your study will covert key topics including design, manufacturing, mechanics, thermofluids, and control systems.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills needed to step into a Commissioning Engineer role at Babcock, with a competitive starting salary of over £45,000 and excellent opportunities for career progression to senior, principal, and management positions.

As part of the Engineering team at Rosyth, you’ll contribute to the development and improvement of products and systems that are critical to Royal Navy operations.

What you’ll need

  • Highers at grades BBBC including Maths at B or above.
  • We accept Foundation Apprenticeships combined with Highers, counting as one Higher at B grade.
