The EC&I Craftsperson Apprentice will be part of our Instruments Services team based on the Sellafield site in Cumbria. Cumbria. The role will provide the successful applicant with the skills and knowledge to allow them to maintain a wide range of measurement systems in our workshop facilities and on customer sites.

The applicant will complete a Level 3 NVQ in Electrical & Instrumentation (EAL) a nationally recognised qualification.


Job Overview:

As an EC&I Craftsperson apprentice you will be a part of our Instruments Services team on the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

You will learn how to maintain & repair the radiological instrumentation around the Sellafield site.

  • To complete a structured training and development programme to become an EC&I Craftsperson
  • To work safely in accordance with all safety, quality, security, environmental and site instructions and requirements.
  • Repair, maintain, calibrate and test Radiation Protection Instruments to ensure customer work demands are met
  • Work to maintenance instructions and record information accurately
  • Conform to local procedures, rules and working practices to ensure compliance with specified regulatory and customer requirements
  • Provide technical advice, updates on work progress and other relevant information to customer as required
  • Identify improvements and innovations in service provision to enhance the efficiency and quality of service provision. Timely implementation of agreed improvements.

Year 1 – Based at Energus & Gen II Colleges

Year 2, 3 & 4 – Based at Sellafield


Entry Requirements:

Qualifications needed for acceptance on to apprenticeships are generally common across all streams.

The requirements are as follows;

Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade 4 (C) or above in subjects including

  • Maths (preferably Grade 5 (B))
  • English Language
  • Science or Technical Subject such as Design Technology.


Equivalent qualifications such as BTECs and NVQs will also be considered as substitutes for above.

Any demonstrable desire, skills and ambition to work in Engineering and Nuclear Industry are favourable


Core responsibilities:

The EC&I Craftsperson is responsible for the first & second line maintenance of Sellafield’s RPI equipment. This involves us having two different teams within our department, a monitor round team & a workshop based team. These two separate teams work under one hierarchy with the same common goal in mind.

The Monitor Round team are a set of EC&I Craftspersons that go around the Sellafield site maintaining the instruments in the changing rooms or on plant. Their role is to make sure all of the instrument remain operational if not, they can carry out a first line repair but if that doesn’t solve the fault the equipment will get removed from the area it’s in and sent up to B151 for the workshop team.

The Workshop team are a set of EC&I Craftspersons that are based in B151, they carry out second line maintenance & repairs on the equipment that’s been removed from plant by the monitor round team along with brand new instrumentation that hasn’t been commissioned yet.

As an EC&I Craftsperson apprentice you will assist both of these teams whilst gaining as much knowledge as you can from them in order to develop yourself from a year 1 apprentice onto a fully qualified EC&I Craftsperson by the end of year 4.


Core Knowledge:

       An EC&I Craftsperson apprentice should have the following knowledge base:

  • The fundamental electronics principles
  • The fundamental principles and implications of the nuclear industry
  • The fundamental radiological principles
  • All aspects of safety (nuclear, radiological, conventional and environmental)
  • A high standard of security and behavioural expectations of those working on nuclear sites.
  • The fundamental principles and implications of radiation hazards.
  • The fundamental knowledge of Cavendish Nuclear’s policies
  • How Human Performance and Human Factors affect nuclear safety
  • The B151 Workshop safety arrangements
  • The Local Rules in the areas around Sellafield site
  • How to respond correctly to Emergency Arrangements


       Core Skills:

        An EC&I Craftsperson apprentice will be able to:

  • Assist the qualified instrument mechanic in primary & secondary maintenance around the Sellafield
  • Carry out primary repairs under the guidance of a qualified EC&I Craftsperson
  • Carry out maintenance under the guidance of a qualified EC&I Craftsperson
  • Work safely in a nuclear environment under a Safe System of Work (SSOW)
  • Work safely in a nuclear environment whilst abiding to the Cavendish Nuclear & Sellafield Ltd Risk Assessments
  • Repair & test IPM detectors whilst in the B151 Workshop
  • Repair & test MHV & PET leads whilst in the B151 Workshop



       An EC&I Craftsperson apprentice will be able to demonstrate the following behaviours:
