About the programme
Cavendish Nuclear is a core part of Babcock’s Nuclear Sector and on our Radiation Protection programme, you’ll learn that at its heart, radiation protection is all about ensuring we protect people and the environment. 


Over two years you'll undertake relevant placements across projects, gaining experience in this vital field. You might find yourself supporting the decommissioning of redundant nuclear facilities, assisting in dismantling retired submarines, or contributing to the safe operation and construction of nuclear facilities.


Whatever you find yourself doing, you’ll be playing an integral role in creating a safer and more secure world.  


Radiation Protection at Babcock
Joining the Radiation Protection Team you’ll work alongside radiation protection experts, learning to assess radiation hazards, suggest improvements, and ensure regulatory compliance.


Throughout the programme you'll collaborate with multi-discipline teams to draft and implement protection policies, and review safety systems. Key tasks include evaluating workplace radiation risks, recommending waste disposal practices, and assessing the environmental impact of radioactive materials. You'll also learn how to provide consultancy support, prepare detailed reports, liaise with regulators, and identify training needs to enhance radiation safety awareness.


Upon successful completion of the programme, you'll advance to the role of Radiation Protection Consultant.


What you'll need
•    A relevant degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) related subject. 
•    A postgraduate qualification in this area, such as an MSc or PG (Dip) in Radiological Protection, would be advantageous.
•    Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for. From decommissioning redundant nuclear facilities, through supporting the Continuous at Sea Deterrent, to supporting the operation and build of nuclear power plants, our role in Cavendish Nuclear is to clean up the nuclear legacy and create a world where nuclear plays a key contribution in protecting our nation, ensuring security of energy supply and meeting our net zero commitments.


You may be based in a number of locations, so you will need to be ready and willing to move throughout your programme. You’ll probably call Bristol home, but you could also work from other sites, including nuclear power stations and naval bases.
