In this role, you will:

  • Provide professional engineering direction within the waterfront Naval Architecture team for the analysis and repair of submarine steel structures and hull systems.
  • Work both on-site within a submarine and in an office environment.
  • Review paint or structural surveys, non-destructive inspection reports and technical queries and provide technical responses, engineering reports, repair specifications, or requests for repair deviations or waivers.
  • Knowledge of international legislations and regulations to ensure submarine operation safety for inspections, audits and surveys.
  • Deliver expertise to assist with verification and plan approvals of a variety of submarine modification and design projects
  • Produce and certify repair specifications, including structural/design calculations and technical drawing packs, for submarine repair requirements.
  • Provide engineering direction and support to the build-up and testing of submarine electrical, hull and structural systems.
  • Witness inspection points and test form execution onboard a submarine.
  • Knowledge of naval engineering disciplines such as marine operation, on-site installation, engines, equipment, systems, on-board installations and commissioning.
  • Provide technical oversight to a small team of 2-3 junior engineers or technicians and provide engineering mentorship for issues related to structural analysis, material selection, repair requirements, etc.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary technical team to develop unique solutions to complex structural repair challenges related to submarines.
  • Work closely with the project management team and the shipyard production personnel to expedite work in a safe and timely fashion; and,
  • Other duties as required.


The ideal candidate brings:

  • An engineering degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited Canadian university or educational institute or from a recognized foreign equivalent.
  • Post-secondary certifications in Marine management considered an asset.
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer or eligibility to become a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Mandatory formal training and experience in the field of Marine Engineering or naval environment
  • Minimum 5+ years of structural, material, or marine engineering experience, supervisory experience considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of structures and their design and/or maintenance requirements.
  • A demonstrated capability to develop and specify complex engineering solutions.
  • Proven knowledge of naval technical drawings, standards and related data
  • Excellent written, verbal, electronic reporting, and data communication skills.
  • Proof of fully vaccinated status against COVID-19, meaning receipt of the full series of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Government of Canada with the final dose at least 14 days prior to the expected start date
  • Eligible for a Canadian Secret Security and ITAR Clearance

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary from $107,000 -$122,000 per annum
  • Extended health, medical, dental, and life insurance
