Purpose of role

Provide guidance and support to operational staff and managers upon the means of managing HS&E risks and implementing the requirements of company HS&E standards by cooperation and collaboration with operational management teams and site staff across the Defence Equipment Business Unit sites and work activities. To provide regular engagement with site operations to identify their Supporting operations, through proactive engagement and competent advice, the operational ownership and delivery of HS&E objectives, the identification and application of ‘best practice’ and the development of a positive Health & Safety culture throughout the workforce by influencing operational managers to establish understanding and accountability for HSE within the work environment.

 

Main tasks

•    Working with site Managers and operational staff to ensure compliance with current legislation and customer Joint Service Publications and Babcock HS&E polices and processes through site reviews and audits and providing feedback to operations upon how to meet Babcock HSE improvements
•    Provide expert advice to the contracts and site on how to implement  current and future Health, Safety& Environmental legislation, and company policies and standards 
•    Review site risk controls and HSE safety arrangements and provide sensible and competent guidance to operations to ensure their HS&E arrangements are fit for purpose
•    Review operations and identify opportunities in collaboration with operations to to improve Risk controls
•    Conduct and coordinate HSE auditing and monitoring reviews and produce effective learning from such audits etc
•    Continually review the suitability and application of current policies and procedures on sites and contracts to ensure successful control of HSE risks and the promotion of a positive HSE culture
•    Work on sites and with operational tams to assess the understanding and adequacy of current controls and engage and explore how risks can be reduced
•    Provide where necessary relevant HSE training and awareness sessions with site staff 
•    Support to operational teams and sites in ensuring they deliver local HSE improvements and local implementation plans
•    Conduct investigation of incidents across the Business Unit to ensure effective understanding, and learning
•    UK based with essential and occasional UK Travel to Defence sites and other locations

 

What do I need to do the role? 

 

Qualifications
•    Minimum - Certificate (L3)  in Health and Safety / HS&E or equivalent qualification or be working towards
•    A minimum of 1 year in a HS&E advisor role preferably engineering or high risk industry.
•    Membership of IOSH or equivalent professional body at Technical or greater grade (e.g. Tech IOSH).
•    Ideally Engaged in a CPD Programme working towards increased IOSH membership status or specialisms related to Occupational Health and Safety knowledge, skills or experience that are beneficial to the company . 
•    Past experience of working in an electrical, mechanical or engineering technical discipline, or other high risk industry

•    Ability to engage effectively with staff at workshop and management at site/contract levels

•    Seeks to take the lead, find solutions and drive tasks to completion
•    Continuously monitors and checks progress of the work against the plan and takes proactive action to overcome blockages and minimise slippage 
•    Effectively prioritises work to deliver to timescales

 

You must hold or have ability to obtain SC security clearance
