Senior Project Engineer
Filton, Bristol

 £36,525 - £40,995
About the Role

As a Senior Project Engineer you’ll support the delivery of outputs into the MoD’s Chief Strategic Systems Executive (CSSE) which is responsible for in-service submarines, including ensuring delivery of the ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) in support on an enduring basis, and delivery of Attack submarines. The CSSE is the UK Project Officer under the Polaris Sales Agreement between the UK and the US.

Using strong project management skills and submarine engineering experience you’ll provide individual project management oversight of some of the most significant and technically complex engineering activities in the submarine domain. You’ll provide specialist in-service support and advice to the CSSE through inputting data and running planning and modelling tools; conduct pan-DLOD programme analysis across the Portfolio; support risk analysis and progress risk characterisation studies, including developing SharpCloud capabilities; apply engineering and project management domain knowledge towards producing technical solutions for delivery of products and services. You’ll also be involved in strategic studies (e.g. Sensitivity Analysis of Submarine Programme, Docking Capacity Studies etc.).

This position is pivotal to the future business of Babcock and will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop and broaden their knowledge and experience across the full range of submarine enterprise operations, including strategic, operational and in depth engineering management.

What do I need to do the role?
You’ll be educated to degree level in a relevant Engineering discipline supported by CEng status, or a demonstrable plan of working towards CEng status. A Project Management qualification at APMP level or above or an appropriate level of experience is highly desirable.

We would also like you to have some or all of the following:

  • Experience as a Project Manager, Project Engineer or Project Support within a programme for the delivery of complex equipment/system projects
  • Experience in the management of submarine systems and their operation is highly advantageous
  • Experience in Strategic Weapons Systems
  • Knowledge Primavera P6 Scheduling

Lastly, you’ll have excellent interpersonal and effective communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to interface successfully and build strong working relationships with both internal stakeholders and the customer.

What else do I need to know?

  • The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. You must be a sole UK national and hold or be capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
  • The post may be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.

What impact does COVID-19 have on the recruitment process?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to ensure that our recruitment processes are regularly reviewed and adapted, as required, to ensure we’re compliant with the latest government advice. We are striving to protect both our current and future employees by acting in a responsible way which reflects the restrictions we may face.

Babcock will be continuing with essential recruitment activity but implementing relevant recommendations to ensure that this is done in a responsible way with consideration of the unprecedented circumstances we are facing.

Interviews will be held by phone, WhatsApp video, FaceTime (where available) or you may be asked to complete an online interview. More information will be provided regarding the format by the recruitment team.

This advice is valid at the time of publication and changing government advice and Babcock working practices take precedence at any particular time.
