Our 4-year Engineering (Design and Manufacture) Graduate Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to contribute to some of the UK’s most important defence programmes, all while working towards a BEng (Hons) degree and building a rewarding career in Electrical Engineering.

About the programme

You'll join a skilled engineering team working across a diverse range of platforms, including ships, submarines, and land-based facilities. Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll support a variety of projects, working alongside specialists and gaining insight into the technologies that power some of the UK's most complex engineering programmes.

As part of the Marine Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) and Mission Systems (MS) Group, you'll rotate through different teams and projects, building an understanding of how the different electrical systems are developed, integrated, and supported throughout their operational life. From power and control systems to navigation, communications, and mission-critical technologies, you'll experience a broad range of disciplines before discovering where your interests and strengths lie.

Supported by experienced colleagues throughout the programme, you'll contribute to activities such as conducting feasibility studies, tackling obsolescence issues, problem solving and systems integration on a variety of platforms. This varied experience will help you develop a strong understanding of Electrical, Control & Instrumentation and Mission Systems engineering in a marine environment and build the technical knowledge needed for a successful career in the industry.

Your education/training

As part of your apprenticeship, you’ll study for a BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Design and Manufacture) through Glasgow Caledonian University.

Delivered through a blended learning model, the programme typically involves one to two days of study per week during term time. Co-designed with industry and accredited by the IET, IMechE, and InstMC, the degree provides a strong academic foundation and supports your journey toward professional recognition.

Alongside your degree studies, you'll benefit from structured workplace development through Babcock, allowing you to apply your academic learning to real engineering challenges while building your professional and technical capabilities.

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of the programme, you'll be ready to step into an Electrical Engineering role, with a competitive salary up to £40,000 per year.

From there, your development doesn’t stop. Through the Babcock Role Framework, you’ll have a clear view of how your career can progress, with mapped-out pathways, development opportunities and the tools you need to get wherever you want to go.
