Are you passionate about 2D and 3D engineering design? Join our 4-year Engineering Design Apprenticeship to begin your specialised engineering career and play a vital role in bringing innovative marine engineering projects to life.

About the programme

The programme’s combination of formal training and practical experience will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work in a specialised engineering design role.

We will welcome you into the expert Design & Engineering team in our Rosyth Design Office. Your training and development will be directed by experienced colleagues who enjoy coaching and mentoring the next generation of designers.

You will be learning to provide engineering designs including 3D modelling, 2D drawings and other technical activities required throughout a design cycle. You’ll gain knowledge of conceptual and detailed design drawings, modelling, simple calculations, and technical solutions in the delivery of customer funded tasks and projects.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects at varied locations across the Rosyth site, such as new shipbuilding projects and upgrades to existing vessels, plus other commercial engineering projects.

Within our Design & Engineering team, we have the following three key disciplines you could ultimately specialise in:

  • Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Designers plan, design, develop, implement, and support electrical systems and equipment.
  • Mechanical Designers plan, design, develop, implement, and support mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Naval Architecture Designers plan, design, develop, implement, and support structures and outfitting.

Your education/training

During your 4-year apprenticeship, you’ll attend college and receive on-site training while working towards the Engineering Technician Modern Apprenticeship Qualification at SCQF Level 7.

In Year 1, you will spend five days a week at Fife College during term time and work in the Design Office during college holidays. From Year 2 onward, you will have regular placements in our Design Office. By year 3 you will be directly contributing to project delivery.

There may also be the opportunity to undertake a relevant HNC qualification. This will likely involve one day per week with the education provider.

Future prospects

Upon completing the programme, you will have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following roles: Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Designer, Mechanical Designer, or Naval Architecture Designer.

As a newly qualified Designer at Babcock, you can expect a competitive salary exceeding £40,000 per annum. Our career pathway also provides opportunities for further development within our Engineering community.
