Our 4-year Civil Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship offers the chance to work on complex infrastructure projects that support the UK’s defence capability, while studying towards a BEng (Hons) degree and developing your career as a Civil Engineer.
About the programme
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience supporting the delivery of civil engineering and infrastructure projects that are critical to the UK’s defence capability. Working alongside experienced engineers and project professionals, you’ll contribute to projects from planning and design through to construction and maintenance.
You’ll gain exposure to the full project lifecycle, supporting activities such as project planning, scheduling and cost tracking, reviewing drawings and technical documentation, and helping to manage project delivery. Through regular site visits, you’ll monitor progress and quality, participate in inspections, support health and safety activities, and observe civil, structural, mechanical and electrical works in live operational environments.
Through a combination of practical experience and structured development, you’ll build skills in project delivery, cost management, technical problem solving and infrastructure asset management, while developing an understanding of the engineering, commercial and operational considerations involved in delivering complex projects.
Your education/training
As part of your apprenticeship, you'll study towards a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering with Heriot-Watt University, combining academic study with practical workplace experience.
Learning is typically delivered through a day-release model, complemented by structured on-the-job development, mentoring from experienced engineers and project professionals, and additional training in areas such as project management, health and safety, sustainability and engineering systems.
This approach allows you to apply your learning in a real-world environment while developing the technical and professional skills needed for a career in civil engineering.
Future prospects
Upon successful completion of the programme, you'll join either the Construction or Facilities team as a Trainee Civil Engineer or Assistant Project Manager, with the opportunity to earn up to £43,000 per year.
From there, your development doesn’t stop. Through the Babcock Role Framework, you’ll have a clear view of how your career can progress, with mapped-out pathways, development opportunities and the tools you need to get wherever you want to go.
