About the role
Here at Babcock International we’re looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer (Electrical & Electronic).

 

You will work within the Weapons Technical Team based at Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. The Technical Team forms part of Mission Systems division of the Defence Systems Technology (DST) business unit within Babcock International. DST is a rapidly growing business unit which operates out from the Combined Weapons Electrical Workshop (CWEW) situated in the Granby Yard enclave at Devonport.

 

You’ll provide oversight and assurance for electrical/electronic design output of the Technical Team, for designs, production drawings, trials and technical reports. Where required, you’ll also provide mentorship of junior members of the team including apprentices, undergraduates and graduates on development placements.

 

Operating within the CWEW Technical Department, the role is to undertake technical activities in support of the Technical Department across all weapon systems supported at CWEW (4.5” Gun, Phalanx CIWS, Harpoon, Triper and future bid opportunities) including:
• Developing design task proposals and requirements.
• Lead concept and detailed design solutions to improve safety, availability, reliability and maintainability on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Engage with Through Life Support, Production and Project Manager to arrange factory and on-board trials to test prototype designs.
• Identify areas for improvement for factory processes, tooling and test equipment.
• Provide engineering solutions for technical problems and obsolescence encountered during production and test of weapon systems assets.
• Undertake root cause analysis to identify shortcomings and potential solutions.
• Lead tasks from concept through to implementation to defined safety standards, cost, programme and quality.
• Present on design interventions to external customers within safety and project management meetings.
• Provide technical support to bid opportunities in support of business growth.
 

What do I need to do the role?
You’ll need excellent communication skills and a drive to solve technical issues in support of the Weapons contracts. Presentation skills will be essential for representing DST through design reviews and presenting design solutions to both internal and external customers. Stakeholder management is essential in this role to ensure internal and external groups are working towards common goals in a timely and acceptable manner.

 

Would also like you to have experience in all or some of these areas:
• Knowledge of relevant standards for electrical design, qualification and acceptance.
• Knowledge of DEF STAN/ BS EN/ BR desirable.
• Experienced designer of electrical/ electronic systems.
• Knowledge of electrical/ electronic components and circuits for analogue, digital and Radio
• Frequencies (RF) assemblies.
• Experienced designer, through concept, detailed and trial stages, producing substantiation and qualification data.
• Competent at performing root cause analysis and fault finding.
• Work as part of a Multi-disciplined team.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of tools including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Experience of software programming (including both embedded and object orientated programming languages) desirable.
