About the role
We’re looking for three Scientist to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of an experienced team within the Chemistry and Reactor Chemistry departments who provide scientific support services to all departments and vessels within HMNB Devonport and, on occasion to our external customers. As a Scientist you’ll advance the ability of the section to respond to our customers’ needs allowing Babcock to maintain the high standards required in a UKAS accredited laboratory. Your key tasks will include, but won’t be limited to, various Chemical and Radio-Chemical classical and instrumental analytical techniques, Safety Critical Testing of atmospheres for work in confined spaces and supplying a Calibration Service.

 

What do I need to do the role?
You’ll be educated to minimum HNC/ Degree level in a relevant scientific subject OR have significant experience of working in a UKAS accredited laboratory together with relevant scientific academic/vocational qualifications. 


We would also like you to have the following attributes:

  • Positive, can-do attitude with a desire to learn new skills.
  • Enthusiasm in science with a motivation of making contributions in a multi-discipline team environment.
  • Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills.

Lastly, experience of working afloat would be highly desirable, however all necessary training will be provided to suitable candidates. More important is the willingness to develop and learn new skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision and an excellent attention to detail.

 

What else do I need to know?
Successful candidates must to be prepared to work a 24 / 7 shift pattern in the Reactor Chemistry section and in Radiological Controlled Areas. Whilst the primary requirement of the post is to work a shift pattern within the Reactor Chemistry section there will, on occasion, be a requirement to work at the Laboratory which is predominately Monday to Friday.


The successful candidate may need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
