Principal Structural Designer

Babcock International are looking to recruit a Principal Structural Designer to join our Energy & Marine Division. Our core skills include Naval Architecture, Systems Engineering, multi-discipline design support and project management for new build and in-service commercial and defence vessels. Our state-of-the-art facilities offer world-class efficiency, scale and quality and our customers include: governments, international shipyards and ship owners and energy majors.

 

Reporting to the Design & Capability Manager, you will lead a team of Structural Designers who support numerous and varied projects. With a diverse product portfolio, we offer an exciting opportunity to join an ever-growing business with longevity. Projects include; design packages to support submarine and surface ship refits for the Royal Navy as well as International Commercial and Naval contracts.

 

Main Purpose of Role

 

As a principal designer, you will act as the discipline and technical lead responsible for the allocation of design tasks to design resource within discipline and for providing specialist technical advice and guidance to others. You will diagnose and resolve complex design issues, lead the resolution of production & technical queries, be accountable for the delivery of fit for purpose design outputs consistent with design brief, act as focal point for discipline estimating and ensure that procedures, codes and standards are correctly identified and applied to design activities

 

What do I need to do the role?

 

Qualifications

 

You’ll need to hold a minimum of a HNC/HND (or BTEC Level 4) in a relevant engineering subject or a suitable higher education qualification and significant experience in technical leading of a design team, with breadth and depth of knowledge of platform structure and design processes.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences

 

To undertake this role, you need to:

  • Have significant experience in a design environment with preferable experience in leading a technical team.
  • Possess excellent CAD skills, written and verbal communication skills and a good understanding of technical risk management.
  • Have a deep understanding of structural design and installation processes.
  • Hold or be willing to work toward gaining Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Develop close working relationships within the wider technical community including other design, safety and engineering teams as well as Project, System and Platform Technical Authorities.

Grade

 

This position is within the Energy & Marine business unit as a Grade 6 which has a salary banding of £42,180 to £51,830 with DRDL Terms and Conditions.

This role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard which is located in the vibrant city of Plymouth, Devon in the south west of England. Plymouth is a city with a long and proud military history and more than its fair share of heritage. Babcock International Group owns and operates the main refit, maintenance and workshop area of the 330 acre naval site at Devonport, known as Devonport Royal Dockyard, where it employs thousands of people. The remainder of the site at Devonport is owned by the Ministry of Defence and is known as Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport – one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe.
