About the role
Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.


The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, with ongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK.


We are looking for a Platform Safety and Environmental Manager within complex shipbuilding, to support Babcock’s current and future ship design and build programmes, including future export variants and other ship building and refit opportunities in the pipeline.


As the Safety and Environmental Manager, you will initially to join the Babcock’s New Build Team, responsible for the definition and management of the programme of activities leading to the publication of a comprehensive SECR for the project, and achievement of relevant Certification.


The role will require the following:

  • The management of a cost effective approach to safety and environmental management, at all times focussed on financial and schedule constraints;
  • Arranging and facilitating Hazard Identification (HAZID) meetings; Preparing for input to the PSEC and Safety and Environmental Working Groups (SEWG),  and recording the outcome of meetings where required by the Authority;
  • Development and publication of a SECR, including annexes covering hazardous aspects;
  • Ensuring all documents meet project configuration control and Quality Assurance processes; Liaison with the Authority on S&E matters;
  • Support to regular Authority Project Reviews, internal reviews and System-level meetings; and manage the Safety and Environmental Team (Team of 5)


In addition, you will belong to the overall E&M Engineering Team comprising all facets of engineering and naval architecture, including new build/upkeep of existing RN and commercial vessels. There will be a multitude of further opportunities to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on expanding your longer term career development.


What do I need to do the role?
You will need a demonstrable experience applying the goals of DSA01.1 in a defence marine project and significant experience managing Safety in the Marine UK defence environment.


We would also like you to have the following:

  • Demonstrable experience of writing Safety Cases, Managing Hazard Logs, running HAZID meetings and managing Hazards through to ‘Broadly Acceptable or Tolerable’ and ‘ALARP’ status;
  • Familiarity and experience implementing Def Stan 00-051, 00-055 and 00-056, as tailored, to a marine defence project;
  • Understanding of Key Hazard Certification processes through Naval Authority Certification according to outcomes of SOLAS or Naval Ship Code (ANEP 77);
  • Be familiar with Standards, Legislation, Regulations and Statutes pertaining to safety and environment of marine vessels;
  • Have an understanding of Software and programmable Elements Safety, sufficient to manage a Subject Matter Expert; and
  • Have an understanding of Marine Environmental Management, sufficient to manage a Subject Matter Expert.


Lastly, you will be required to have a high level of developed knowledge, the role is directly accountable for design development and determines solutions to problems/issues within your specialist subject area. You will provide support and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.


What else do I need to know?


The role can be based in either Bristol, Devonport or Rosyth with flexible working arrangements and UK travel to meet project requirements. Also, you will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements, this will require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
