Job Description

Babcock is looking for exceptional apprentices to train across various apprenticeships at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

 

Our Higher Level engineering apprenticeship schemes take 4 years to complete. During this time you will earn a competitive apprentice wage and gain hands-on technical experience in the work place. As part of the structured training programme you will complete specific qualifications alongside your apprenticeship programme, whilst being provided with continual support.

 

The next apprenticeship scheme will commence on Monday 5th September 2022.

Higher Level Apprenticeship in:

Mechanical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

Naval Architecture

 

The Higher Level Engineering apprenticeship is technically focused towards roles such as:

 

• Commissioning Engineer – testing and fault finding ship & submarine systems to make sure they function correctly

• Design Engineer – creating designs and proposals for new equipment and upgrades to ships, submarines and infrastructure

• Class Output Management – designing maintenance programmes for warships

• Naval Architects could also be involved in docking and undocking ships & submarines

 

You can choose to specialise in one of the following three main areas:

• Higher Level Mechanical

• Higher Level Electrical

• Higher Level Naval Architect

 

Year 1

This will be spent outside the Devonport site learning the basic skills of your trade and carrying out a formal technical qualification.

 

Year 2–4

Where possible, you will be placed in an area of the business of your choice to remain with for the rest of your apprenticeship, becoming highly skilled and competent within this specialism, and an integral member of your team. You will undertake placements within this area to broaden your knowledge and experience, as well as attending college one day per week to continue your technical education.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate clear potential to continuously grow and develop their skills, and who can match this with the drive and dedication needed to become a success in the beginning stages of their career. We want to meet with people who can demonstrate a strong aptitude for and interest in technical-based subject matter.  Other specific areas of competency we require you to demonstrate are as follows:
 

  • Qualified to the standard specified above depending on your chosen apprenticeship.

  • Robust work ethic and willingness to take responsibility for personal, academic and vocational development.

  • Safety conscious and show high levels of reliability, punctuality and dependability.

  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team and build strong relationships with co-workers.

 

To apply you will need the following qualifications:
 

Minimum GCSE Grade C or 4 in English, Maths and Science plus an additional 2 A Levels at Grade C or above, one of the subjects being a Maths or Science based subject or BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering (credit or above)
 
Security
Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.

 

Salary
Our Higher Level Engineering Apprentices start with a salary of £17,375 per annum going up each year to £29,175 in year four.

These roles are based at Devonport Royal Dockyard which is located in the vibrant city of Plymouth, Devon in the south west of England.

Business Area- Devonport
Babcock International Group owns and operates the main refit, maintenance and workshop area of the 330 acre naval site at Devonport, known as Devonport Royal Dockyard, where it employs thousands of people. The remainder of the site at Devonport is owned by the Ministry of Defence and is known as Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport – one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe.
 
Babcock and the Ministry of Defence work in partnership to operate and maintain this co-located site by providing through-life support for submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment.
Babcock has a large design and technology capability providing a wide range of support activities including feasibility and project definition studies, detail design and draughting, development trials, noise and vibration analysis, structural analysis, project management, integrated logistic support and risk management.
