About the Role

Here at Babcock International, we are looking for a Design Process Manager to play a key role in ensuring our design capability is adequate to deliver major nuclear and non-nuclear infrastructure upgrades.

HMNB Devonport is one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We are a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. A new ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ (MIP) Business Unit has been established to focus on the significant facility developments.

As Design Process Manager, you will be a key part of the team led by the Head of Design, part of the wider core team and Design Authority. You will have the objective of developing and maintaining a highly effective design engineering and management function to deliver the highly complex and significant infrastructure capabilities.

Using your substantial experience of design development and management (and ideally safety) in high hazard/consequence, complex industries, as relevant to major infrastructure project requirements your key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the application, review and assurance of design management functions throughout the Major Infrastructure Projects Portfolio, to include Systems Engineering/Requirements Management, Interface Management, Engineering Assumptions and Risks;
  • Ensuring engineering processes/guidance and tools are developed and articulated in the MIP Business Management System, working closely with associated site stakeholders, and ensuring incorporation of Learning from Experience (LfE) and good practice;
  • Leading on the realisation/implementation of engineering processes/arrangements via the development and delivery of training and monitoring effectiveness.
  • Supporting the development of engineering tools such as the BIM toolset for MIP and subsequent knowledge transfer to other site engineering teams.

What do I need to do the role?

You will be educated to Degree level in a STEM discipline and preferably registered as a Chartered Engineer (or the ability to achieve professional status).

We would also like you to have the following experience:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of engineering/ (ideally) infrastructure design development and management (requirements, interfaces, assumptions & risks) in high hazard/consequence industries;
  • Systems engineering knowledge and experience in practice;
  • Development of scalable engineering processes to suit both the nuclear AND non-nuclear environment;
  • Identification and integration of engineering software tools and applications in design;
  • Strong team working ethic, who can recognise and harness the specific skill sets of specialist stakeholders (e.g. Heath, Safety & Environment, Security etc.);
  • Interaction with Quality Auditors, Nuclear Regulators and other stakeholders.

What else do I need to know?

You will work 36 hours per week Monday to Friday. You will hold, or be eligible to acquire, Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
