Supportability Engineer

Bristol and Barrow-in-Furness

About the role

Have you ever wondered what it takes to support our nuclear deterrent? The Dreadnought programme, which has recently received full parliamentary approval, will deliver a new generation of submarines to carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent. It is the largest programme in Defence with a budget of £34 billion confirmed in the Strategic Defence and Security Review.

We are charged with ensuring that the Dreadnought submarines, and the support arrangements that we and others provide, can ensure the delivery of the UK’s Continuous At-Sea Deterrent patrols. As a Supportability Engineer you’ll use your knowledge and skills to ensure that our nuclear deterrent is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Its a huge task and one that you’ll have a major part in delivering for the current Vanguard-class platforms. As part of the role you could be involved in one of three parts of the programme:

  • Influencing the design of the submarine – maximising ease of support in service;
  • Developing an in-service Support Solution which demonstrably satisfies requirements for availability and cost;
  • Ensuring the submarine can be maintained within safe operating limits.

Whilst you’re supporting the programme we’ll be supporting you. As well as the opportunity to work on one of the most high-profile engineering projects in the UK you’ll receive all the benefits, training and knowledge you’ll need to progress.

Supportability is a rapidly developing field in Engineering and it brings together people of various backgrounds and skills - so it provides an ideal platform to learn on the job.

About You

With a HND/HNC or Degree level qualifications in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or related field) you’ll be an excellent communicator and able to articulate complex arguments for a wide range of stakeholders to understand. You’ll need to be able demonstrate the motivation to drive issues to completion and to continue your professional development.

Lastly, project management experience or qualifications would be advantageous as the role requires the delivery of documentation to time and budget.

What else do I need to know?

  • Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements.  You must be a sole UK national and hold or be capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
  • The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
  • We are happy to talk about flexible working.  Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.
