The Coating Surveyor / Inspector role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role

 

The difference our new Coating Surveyor / Inspector will make
As a Coating Surveyor / Inspector you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Capturing the material state of assets coatings and provide coating specifications to ensure the longevity of Ministry of Defence (MOD) assets (primarily SSN, SSBN & Warships) and marine associated structures.

The role requires the individual develop specialist, knowledge, experience and qualifications coating systems and inspection processes. This will allow the resolution of a broad range of coating issues and problems, provide quality controls to Babcock / DRDL re-fit projects and their subcontractors.
 
This is achieved by:
 
•    Capturing the material state of assets coatings and provide coating specifications to ensure the longevity of Ministry of Defence (MOD) assets (primarily SSN, SSBN & Warships) and marine associated structures.
•    Undertaking the QA / QC requirement to ensure coating application meet the customer specification
•    Supporting technical queries from the customer, subcontractors, and project groups with regards to coating specification, surface preparation and coating application.
•    Support coating surveys and QA/QC inspections within radiologically controlled areas

Essential experience

 

Key Skills and Knowledge:
•    A working knowledge of coating processes and procedures particularly relating to marine structures.
•    An understanding of the control and use of calibrated equipment.


 Qualifications
•    Certified or working towards ICORR (Institute of corrosion) coating inspector with IMO PSPC ) Performance Standard for Protective Coatings) accreditation preferred.


Experience:
•    Experience in the marine coating sector.
•    Understanding of coating survey and QA/QC inspection.
•    Knowledge of the required QA/QC codes and standards.
•    Be able to provide coating product application and surface preparation guidance on all levels of structure on submarines and floating assets.
•    Be able to support the preparation and review of survey reports.
