Principal Engineer

This is an exciting time for Babcock Marine as the Defence Industry embarks on supporting the development of the Future Submarines and the Hunter Class Frigates.

We currently have an exciting newly created and full time permanent opportunity for an experienced and professional Principal Engineer to join our high performing marine team in Osborne.


About the Role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager this role will provide engineer governance, leadership and support to the project team and greater business in order to deliver project goals and drive continuous improvement of the engineering processes and activities.

The roles responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following areas:

  • Defining, reviewing and approving processes and plans that describe how engineering will be conducted for individual projects, including safety engineering aspects;
  • Provide engineering support and governance for project activities;
  • Be responsible for the preparation of information and presentation at formal reviews with customers (internal and external).
  • Have an excellent understanding of requirements management and interface management
  • Ensure completion of the defined work packages to the agreed scope, budget and timescales.
  • Undertaking approval of the system design, supporting technical documentation and project Subcontract Data Requirements List (SDRL) deliverables;
  • Ensuring adherence to Engineering Policies and working as part of a team to ensure the engineering capability is fit for purpose;
  • Leading the improvement of systems engineering capability in the engineering team;
  • Manage project Australian Industry Capability obligations to meet contract requirements;
  • Attend Working Groups as required;
  • Attend and participate in internal and customer project design reviews.


About You

This role will align with an experienced Principal or Lead Engineer that has high level experience in large scale projects involving multi-disciplinary engineering teams and engineering execution within the Defence sector. You will be degree qualified in an associated discipline and preferable have CPEng status and will possess excellent interpersonal and analytical skills. Additionally you will be a confident team player that has a passion for identifying and driving improvement activities and enjoys working within a team environment but can also work autonomously as required. You will have exceptional time management and organisational experience coupled with an ability to prioritise, plan and organise your work load and timeframes with a strong attention to detail. The successful candidate will have high level computer skills and have a proven ability to adapt and learn new systems and processes quickly. Familiarity with System Safety Engineering or Integrated Logistic Support would be highly regarded

Successful candidate must hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance.
