FHFRR HF Technician

Babcock is looking for a Maintenance Engineering Technician to join the Fixed High Frequency Radio Refresh (FHFRR) team based in Waiouru.

About the role

Step into a critical role supporting New Zealand’s defence communications infrastructure. As an HF Radio System Technician, you’ll be part of a dedicated team maintaining and repairing mission-critical radio communication systems. You’ll work on advanced technology, contribute to high-stakes operations, and be trusted to keep systems running seamlessly—day or night. About you

You are a hands-on problem-solver with solid experience in radio communications or electronics. With a methodical approach and a drive to dig deep into diagnostics, you confidently tackle component-level issues. You enjoy being part of a team that keeps essential systems running under pressure. You’re ready for the responsibility of on-call support and excited by the opportunity to contribute to national defence. Your reliability, curiosity, and ability to adapt make you a valued asset from day one.

Key Required Skills

• Fault diagnosis to component level
• HF radio system maintenance
• Technical documentation skills
• Computer literacy
• Strong written and verbal communication

• Basic engineering software use (PLM, MRP)
• Adherence to safety and compliance standards

Key Required Qualifications

• Advanced trade certificate in Radio Telecommunications (NQF Level 5 or equivalent)
• A+ and N+ computer/network qualifications
• Practicing licence as Electronic Service Technician (A & B)
• Eligible for NZDF Site and NZSIS Secret Security Clearance
