Our three‑year Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship is designed to give you the skills, knowledge and practical experience needed to build a successful career working on military vehicles. You’ll train in a live operational environment, develop specialist technical capability and work towards a nationally recognised qualification.
About the programme
As part of Programme HADES, Babcock supports the Royal Air Force across 12 military bases. In this apprenticeship, you’ll help maintain the Ministry of Defence vehicle fleet at RAF Valley, ensuring each vehicle remains safe, reliable and ready for use.
You’ll join a supportive team and bring an interest in vehicle maintenance, a careful and accurate approach to your work, and the motivation to develop new skills. It’s a practical and rewarding role where you’ll gain specialist knowledge and make a meaningful contribution to RAF operations.
Your education/training
You will spend four days a week in the Motor Transport Maintenance Services section at RAF Valley, and one day a week at Coleg Menai, Llangefni.
You’ll learn all aspects of vehicle maintenance as well as the specialist requirements involved in working with military vehicles. You’ll follow the curriculum set out by your assessor and, in addition, receive training in areas such as:
- Fuel pumping and dispensing on fuel bowser vehicles
- Medium‑depth repairs on corrosion‑assessed vehicles
- Preventative maintenance to extend vehicle life.
By the end of the apprenticeship, you will achieve a recognised Level 3 NVQ qualification in Heavy Vehicles.
Future prospects
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will qualify as an HGV Technician, with a starting salary of around £25,000. You may also have the opportunity to pursue higher-level qualifications to further your career within Babcock across a variety of roles and functions.
