Job Title:  Assistant Engineer
SF30521
Location: Keynsham, Bristol
Salary: £31,470 - £35,550

About the Role

Have you ever wondered what it takes to support our nuclear deterrent? The Dreadnought programme, which has recently received full parliamentary approval, will deliver a new generation of submarines to carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent. It is the largest programme in UK Defence with a budget of £34 billion confirmed in the Strategic Defence and Security Review.

Babcock are charged with ensuring that the Dreadnought submarines, and the support arrangements that we and others provide, can ensure the safe delivery of the UK’s Continuous At-Sea Deterrent patrols at an acceptable cost to the nation. As a Supportability Engineer you’ll use your knowledge and skills to ensure that our nuclear deterrent is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Whilst you’re supporting the programme we’ll be supporting you. As well as the opportunity to work on one of the most high-profile and complex engineering projects in the UK you’ll receive all the benefits, training and knowledge you’ll need to progress.

As an Assistant Supportability Engineer you'll apply engineering domain knowledge competently to provide technical solutions in the delivery of products and services while developing domain knowledge, experience and leadership skills.

As part of the role you could be involved in support of one of three parts of the programme: Influencing the design of the submarine – maximising ease of support in service; Developing an in-service Support Solution which demonstrably satisfies requirements for availability and cost; Ensuring the submarine can be maintained within safe operating limits.

The role will involve iterative development of support products for validation and verification during the build, test and commissioning phase and ultimately for use during the platform’s service life.

What do I need to do the role?
Ideally with an HND/HNC or Degree level qualification in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or related field)
We would also like you to have the following:

  •  the ability to take complex engineering problems and resolve them into easy to understandable outputs for use by a wide range of stakeholders.
  •  the ability to apply a broad range of engineering knowledge to determine solutions to problems and have the ability to identify areas for future improvement.
  •  the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, however with the confidence to seek guidance from others for more unusual or complex problems and situations.

Lastly, you’ll be an excellent communicator and able to articulate complex arguments for a wide range of stakeholders to understand. You’ll need to be able demonstrate the motivation to drive issues to completion and to continue your professional development.

What else do I need to know?

  • This position is based in Keynsham, which is situated between Bristol (5 miles) and Bath (7 miles).
  • The Supportability Engineer will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. You must be a sole UK national and hold or be capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
  •  The post will be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
