About the role

 

An opportunity currently exists for a motivated individual to join our Aviation & Critical Services team as Base Manager on a 12-month fixed term contract, supporting our operations in Horn Island by contributing to emergency services helicopter operations in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area In addition, the incumbent will support the implementation phase of a new contract that will commence in Q4 of 2026 This is a Monday to Friday position, with an on-call requirement.

 

As part of this role, you will:

 

  • Oversee the operational delivery requirements of the emergency services contract.
  • Support the implementation of the new contract commencing Q4 2026, including local Management of Change activities
  • Manage all staff, aircraft, and rosters, with a strong focus on welfare, morale, and contract compliance.
  • Facilitate safe aviation operations at Horn Island Base, ensuring full compliance with CASA, contractual, and company policies.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for client agencies, ensuring operational requirements are met efficiently, with flight safety as the top priority.
  • Manage all client reporting and KPIs in line with contractual obligations.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships across all service delivery areas.
  • Serve as the key liaison for Horn Island Airport operations, fostering effective relationships with the Airport Operator and Torres Shire Council to ensure safe and compliant procedures.
  • Oversee Babcock’s facilities and assets, including hangars, accommodation, vehicles, and fuel, ensuring they support operational requirements.
  • Promote Babcock’s Just Culture and Safety Management System, including leading regular Base Safety Meetings and safety initiatives.
  • Uphold the highest professional standards, demonstrating Babcock’s Purpose and Principles with a strong safety and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ensure full implementation of Babcock policies and procedures, maintaining compliance with aviation regulations, security protocols, and safety standards.
  • Support Babcock’s community engagement initiatives in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area

 

About You

 

Essential requirements:

 

  • Must reside, preferably on Horn or Thursday Island.
  • Proven experience in aviation and/or operational management, with strong team leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a generative safety culture and implement operational risk management, ideally in an aviation environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and perform under pressure in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with a focus on achieving shared outcomes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Committed to continuous improvement.
  • Sound commercial acumen.
  • Strong administrative, time management, and organisational skills, able to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficient in rostering and fatigue management.
  • High personal integrity and professionalism.
  • Must be an Australian citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance.
  • High cultural competence working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Eligible for an Aviation Security Identification Card.

 

Desirable requirements:

 

  • Previous pilot or aircrew experience in rotary or fixed wing.
  • Knowledge of aviation regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Willingness to undertake a touring role based in Cairns if not located in Horn Island or Thursday Island
