CDM / Principal Designer

About the role


Here at Babcock International we’re looking to recruit an experienced CDM Advisor to undertake the role of Principal Designer to lead and supervise a team of Clerk of Works to ensure all construction work is carried out in line with the CDM and HSE Regulations.


The main responsibilities of this role are as follows;


  • Work with project managers and Principal Designers to ensure that the delivery of all construction projects is fully compliant with the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
  • Provide coaching to project managers on CDM 2015 in particular that of the Principal Designer.
  • To ensure all construction work is done in a safe and planned manner so that risk of injury and/or accident is mitigated so far as reasonably practicable.
  • To support the thorough investigation of accidents and incidents to ensure suitable and sufficient steps are taken to ensure there is no reoccurrence.
  • To provide H&S guidance to the projects team.
  • To produce, maintain and develop the department suite of H&S documentation in order to ensure it is comprehensive and continually up to date with current legislation.
  • Support delivery of contractor workshops to ensure that the required H&S standards are met or exceeded by supply chain partners.
  • Provide pre-works advice and review Contractor Risk Assessments and Method Statements when requested. 


What do I need to do the role?


We are looking for an experienced Construction H&S Manager with specific Principal Designer and CDM Adviser experience to lead and support a team, in ensuring all construction activities are carried out in a safe and compliant manner.


The successful candidate will display the following skills and experience;


  • Formal training in Occupational Health and Safety such as NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ 4 etc.
  • CMIOSH or working towards Chartered Status of a construction or engineering professional body.
  • Good knowledge of construction and engineering principals.
  • Prior experience in managing a CDM/ Construction Health & safety team, working in Construction Health & Safety.
  • Able to write technical reports which provide analysis, interpretation and root cause of events as well as providing recommendations.
  • Having a thorough understanding of all legal and statutory frameworks especially CDM Regulations and the Health & Safety at Work Act.
  • High level communication skills to engage with stakeholders at all levels.


What else do I need to know?


This role covers both HM Naval Base Clyde, located 6 miles north of Helensburgh in the West of Scotland and RNAD Coulport located 8 miles from Faslane and 13 miles north of Helensburgh in the West of Scotland. We are well placed for commuter links to Glasgow and the wider region, with easy access for car and public transport.
