Kickstart your career in engineering with our 4-year Electrical Apprenticeship. Gain technical qualifications and hands-on experience working on major rail projects.

About the programme

As an electrical apprentice, you'll receive formal training and practical engineering experience, developing skills to support the Babcock Rail business.

You'll gain experience in design, installation, and testing across various electrical rail disciplines, including points heating, signalling power, and external lighting. This includes both day and night shifts to ensure comprehensive experience in renewal and refurbishment projects.

Your education/training

During your apprenticeship, you'll work towards an SVQ in Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5 and an SCQF Level 7 Diploma in Engineering.

In the first year, you'll train at East Kilbride Group Training Association's facility, completing a National Certificate in an Engineering Discipline and SVQ in Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5.

In years 2 to 4, you'll continue training with Higher National Certificate studies on a day-release basis at a local college and complete a SCQF Level 7 Diploma in Engineering. You'll also attend rail safety and technical courses at our Hamilton training facility and work with operational teams to gather the required evidence for your SCQF Level 7 qualification.

Future prospects

Upon completing the apprenticeship, you'll have two primary career paths to choose from. The first path focuses on gaining further experience and qualifications as an electrician, with opportunities to advance to site supervision roles. Alternatively, you can pursue a career in design and construction, with the potential to become a Contractors Responsible Engineer, a role vital in ensuring that engineering work on infrastructure projects meets the required safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Babcock is dedicated to supporting your continuous development, encouraging you to grow and advance within the company. Whichever path you choose, you'll find ample opportunities to develop your skills and achieve your career goals.
