About the role
At HMNB Clyde, we manage a number of activities on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and currently we’re looking for a Senior Support Engineer (Waterfront) to join us.

Babcock’s Submarine Support Management Group (SSMG) provide engineering and design services support to the Ministry of Defence, and in particular to the In-service Submarines (ISM) team who form part of the Defence Engineering and Support Organisation. As part of SSMG, the Clyde team provides a permanent presence at the Waterfront to provide subject matter expert knowledge and experience to all stakeholders within the Naval Base, including all submarine crews. This creates a varied, exciting and challenging area to work within and provides excellent opportunities for future growth.

As a Senior Waterfront Support Engineer you’ll be working with a small team of professional engineers who are responsible for the day to day provision of engineering support to Royal Navy Submarine Ships Staff, the MoD and Naval Base Authorities in relation to in-service operational requirements.  Frequently working autonomously you’ll draw on your knowledge, diagnostic skills and experience to independently make recommendations around; system operation, defect history, material specification, temporary/permanent repair options, alternative stores, repair time and impact on the submarine programme.

This position will provide the successful candidate with an exciting opportunity to work within the high tempo and technically challenging environment of nuclear submarine maintenance and repair.


What do I need to do the role?
You’ll be HND/HNC qualified and have significant and relevant knowledge of Nuclear Submarines, including their basic construction, major equipment and operational routines. Experience working with MoD practices either from a Dockyard, MoD, or Naval operating background is highly desirable.

We would also like you to have the following:

  • Ability to provide high quality in-service recommendations on the technical aspects of submarines.
  • Good understanding of Platform and Combat technical issues
  • Ability to resolve technical issues raised during the generation and installation of Design Changes
  • Ability to conduct investigations and respond to external technical enquiries within the required timescale.
  • IT literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Lastly, you’ll possess strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to interface effectively with key internal and external stakeholders; the Royal Navy and MoD sponsors.


What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will be a sole UK National and will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This will require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
