The role
As a Senior Support Engineer – Submarines you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Babcock’s Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) Group (formally SSMG) is contracted to provide engineering and design services support to the Ministry of Defence, and in particular, In-service Submarines (ISM) Project Team who form part of the Defence Engineering and Support Organisation.
As part of SSE, the Clyde Waterfront Team are permanently located within HMNB Clyde and provide expert knowledge and experience to all stakeholders within the Naval Base, including all submarine crews. This creates a varied, exciting and challenging area to work within and provides excellent opportunities for future growth.
Day to day, you’ll be working with a small team of professional engineers, and responsible for the day to day provision of engineering support to Royal Navy submarine Ships Staff, as well as the Ministry of Defence and Naval Base personnel in relation to in-service operational requirements.
- Provide drawings and data to submarine crews
- Use knowledge and experience to advise on system operations, defect history, repair options, timeframes, etc.
Essential experience of the Senior Support Engineer - Submarines:
- Provision of high quality in-service recommendations to the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence (MoD), Babcock Marine and other key stakeholders on the technical aspects of submarine issues
- Knowledge to support Ships Staff and Base Staff for the resolution of urgent operational, technical and stores related enquiries
- Ability to conduct investigations and respond to Bristol technical enquiries within the required timescale
- Resolution of technical issues raised during the generation and installation of Design Changes.
- Having an appreciation of the ISM organisational structure and its working practices within Clyde and Bristol is desirable
- Possess the knowledge and ability to process and understand all Platform and Combat technical issues, in order to discuss queries raised with the system experts, ISM Class Manager’s and associated Design Authority
This role is full time, 36 hours a week on site, 4.5 days with a 9 day fortnight being trialled currently. Based at our Faslane, Clyde site.
Qualifications for the Senior Support Engineer - Submarines:
- Ideally be HND/HNC qualified (not essential)
- As the SSE Clyde Waterfront Team are expected to support all Clyde based nuclear submarines, a healthy knowledge of all classes, including their operations, is deemed essential.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
