About the role

We currently have an opportunity for a Safety Case Engineer (SCE) to support the production, maintenance and development of Nuclear Safety Cases to join the team.

 

As a Safety Case Engineer you will evaluate the risks associated with Nuclear Propulsion (NP), Nuclear Weapon (NW), Strategic Weapon System (SWS) and Tactical Weapon System (TWS) operations conducted within HMNB Clyde and demonstrate through provision of safety justifications that the associated risks are ALARP.

 

You will support the implementation of a site wide Periodic Review of Safety (PRS) programme and as part of that support provide independent technical assessment of the nuclear facilities at HMNB Clyde, when requested to co-ordinate PRS resources. 

 

The successful candidates will support their Senior Safety Case Engineer to deliver safely, on time, to specification and within an agreed budget; whilst ensuring close liaison with all key stake holders throughout.

 

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the Senior Safety Case Engineer in maximising the utilisation and the efficiency of all the departments’ resource.
  • Ensure that all tasks are carried out in accordance with the Company’s cost, time and quality requirements.
  • Produces robust Safety Justifications for the authorisation of operations affecting Nuclear Safety and Explosive Safety at HMNB Clyde in accordance with Ministry of Defence (MOD) Authorisation Conditions, Base Policies (Standards), Regulatory documentation, Naval Nuclear Safety Principles and Statutory Legislation.
  • Responsible for the production and maintenance of Safety Cases and all supporting documentation.
  • Conducts Fault Identification studies (e.g. Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP) in accordance with appropriate site guidance in order to facilitate the development of the safety argument.
  • Conducts ALARP workshops in accordance with appropriate site guidance, in order to determine whether operations/activities are ALARP. This involves undertaking optioneering studies, cost-benefit analysis and appraisal studies, with the aim of reducing risk to an optimum level that is tolerable.
  • Acts as departmental representative at on-site nuclear committees and provide technical expertise in support of Safety Case documentation.
  • Provides departmental input and verification into the base Maintenance Concession process and provide justification/assurance that any concessions presented to Authorisation Groups do not impact on the Safety Case for the Facility or Utility.
  • Undertakes Peer Reviews, Technical Assessments and Verifications of safety documentation produced within SJG in order to demonstrate robust and valid safety justifications, thus ensuring that base requirements are met and when required to undertake Independent Peer Reviews or Technical Assessments of documents produced outside the Department.
     

What do I need to do the role?

You will preferably have demonstrable experience in the production and review of Nuclear Safety Cases and experience presenting their output to Safety Committees. You should also have a Degree level qualification in an Engineering or Science discipline or a fully completed Engineering Apprenticeship plus further education to a minimum of HNC level (or equivalent qualification).

 

We would also like you to have:

  •  A good understanding of current nuclear relevant good practice and legislative/ regulatory requirements.
  • A track record of making intelligent evidence based decisions using various sources of data.
  • The ability to effectively manage and prioritise their own workload.
  • Degree level qualification in an Engineering or Science discipline or a fully completed Engineering Apprenticeship plus further education to a minimum of HNC level (or equivalent qualification).
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Weapons or Nuclear Reactor plants would be desirable, but not essential.
  • Proficient use of MS Office software, in particular MS Excel and MS Word.
  • Well-developed presentation and communication skills
  • Excellent relationship-building and networking skills.

 

What else do I need to know?

  • This role is based at HM Naval Base Clyde, located 6 miles north of Helensburgh in the West of Scotland. We are well placed for commuter links to Glasgow and the wider region, with easy access for car and public transport.
  • Candidates deemed successful at application will initially be invited to complete a situational judgement and verbal reasoning, with our final stage involving a structured interview and presentation, due to COVID the final stage will be conducted via video interview.
