Shape the Safety Standards That Protect the Nation’s Most Critical Infrastructure

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Safety Engineer at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As a Safety Engineer, you’ll play a significant part in supporting the safe delivery and operation of vital defence infrastructure. Your work will underpin the statutory, regulatory and engineering processes that ensure the effective running of the UK’s naval facilities and nuclear-licensed operations.

Day-to-day, you’ll be preparing hazard identification and safety assessment documentation that meets nuclear site licence conditions, regulatory requirements and Babcock’s own internal standards. Working closely with Senior Safety Engineers, technical specialists and project teams, you’ll help ensure that all safety documentation is delivered accurately on time and aligned with operational needs.

  • Preparing Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation in line with agreed standards and statutory legislation.
  • Ensuring safety documentation fully reflects the scope of operations and supports timely programme delivery.
  • Identifying required remedial actions or additional technical/safety justifications and agreeing these with the Senior Safety Engineer.
  • Delivering safety documentation that aligns with established safety strategies and approved safety engineering techniques.
  • Supporting other Safety Assessment authors by providing quality review services within your area of expertise.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Safety Engineer

  • Background in nuclear or radiological safety is highly beneficial, though not essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders and senior managers.
  • Competence in producing technical documentation and navigating regulatory or highly controlled engineering environments.
  • Proven ability to operate within structured processes and deliver high‑quality outputs to tight deadlines.

Qualifications for the Safety Engineer

  • Degree in an Engineering or Scientific discipline and/or relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
