The role
As a Waste Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. We are seeking an experienced Waste Engineer to join a friendly and motivated team of people who are proud to ensure that our work is compliant and safe. 

 

Day-to-day, the Radioactive Waste Team is focused on site wide waste demand, governance, project integration and technical support to the business.

  • To provide waste management expertise in support of the characterisation, processing, sentencing, and packaging of radioactive Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), Low Level Waste (LLW) and Conditionally Exempt waste (CEW).
  • Provision of advice and guidance to major projects to enable timely treatment and/or disposal of their radioactive waste arisings.
  • Development and implementation of relevant documentation, ensuring compliance with licences and permits relating to radioactive waste through the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT).

 

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

 

Essential experience of the Waste Engineer

  • An applied understanding of radioactive waste management including characterisation, processing, sentencing, packaging, and transport. 
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK Nuclear Industry. 
  • Knowledge of BAT and the presentation of suitably underpinned and justifiable supporting arguments. 
  • High levels of numeracy and IT proficiency; the interpretation of data and the development and manipulation of spreadsheets. 
  • Good writing skills, including the ability to communicate key technical information at various levels.

 

Qualifications for the Waste Engineer

  • Degree qualified in a relevant subject or equivalent experience 
  • Radioactive waste management qualifications and/or experience is essential.

 

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
