The Senior Structural Designer role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The Role

 

The difference our new Senior Structural Designer will make


As a Senior Structural Designer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Acting as the main focal point for checking technical outputs, within discipline, in accordance with company and regulatory standards.

 

Day to day, you will advise and assist in selecting the correct methods and tools for tasks, provide technical assistance to designers and trainee designers within the team and contribute to the preparation/production of design outputs across the design lifecycle in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost, and quality requirements, you may, depending on business need, manage a small team of designers within discipline. You will support the Principal Designer in the allocation of discipline tasks to assigned team of Designers, check team drawing outputs, and ensure inter discipline coordination in accordance with company and regulatory standards and advise and assist in discipline estimating to allow for commonality and norms.

Essential Experience

 

To undertake this role, you need to:

 

•    Have undertaken an engineering apprenticeship in a relevant discipline or possess transferable skills from demonstrable experience in a marine/engineering/technical environment.
•    Possess a general understanding of engineering practices (including an awareness of industry codes and standards) as relevant to discipline.
•    Obtain or have the ability to obtain SC Clearance

 

Qualifications

You’ll need to hold a minimum of a HNC (or BTEC Level 4) in a relevant engineering subject or an applicable higher education qualification along with suitable experience and a sound knowledge of platform structures and design processes.

 

Knowledge

A sound understanding of specific design practices as relevant to individual and related discipline, post, and project requirements.
