The role
As a Senior Safety Engineer (WOME), you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. We seek a Senior Engineer (Safety and Environmental) specialising in Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME) to produce outputs for Babcock products, which meet the safety and environmental requirements of applicable legislation and Ministry of Defence Policy. You will join a national team of over eight hundred engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets.

 

Day to day, the Senior Safety Engineer (WOME) will:
•    Working as part of a team to provide professional WOME safety and environmental engineering support to naval ship projects including design, build, launch and trials 
•    Provide WOME safety and environmental input to non-conformances and design changes to influence the safety of the design
•    Authorship of technical documentation such as WOME Safety & Environmental Case Reports
•    Attend and record hazard identification and review meetings as well as developing and maintaining hazard logs
•    Support other members of the UKME SEG in the development of safety and environmental assessments or cases

 

This role is a full time position and will consist of a 36 hour working week. It will be based out of Devonport with flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

The Senior Engineer (Safety and Environmental) is required to have an engineering background in a relevant discipline and experience of WOME safety and environmental assessment/management processes, that are specifically directed towards systems or product safety and environmental assessment. The following experience is required:

 

Experience of the Senior Safety Engineer (WOME):
•    Experience of working in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
•    Good knowledge of complex engineering in ships and/or submarines or equivalent systems
•    The ability to compile / author technical reports to a high standard and quality
•    An understanding of Defence Standard 00-101 (Design Standards for Explosives Safety in MOD Ships and Submarines) and its application in ships
•    An understanding and application of the SETHA process in Maritime Acquisition Publication 01-103 and an understanding the process to achieve Certification for WOME in maritime platforms
•    An awareness of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code and an awareness of Allied Naval Engineering Publication 77 (Naval Ship Code)
•    Relevant experience regarding the facilitation and recording of Hazard Identification and Assessment meetings
•    Awareness and / or experience of the following techniques: Structured What If Technique (SWIFT), Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOpS), Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, Failure Mode Effect & (Criticality) Analysis (FME(C)A).


Qualifications for the Senior Safety Engineer (WOME):
•    Ideally degree qualified in an engineering discipline but extensive experience in a relevant field will be considered
•    Preferably already hold the Defence Maritime Regulator’s (DMR) Ship Safety & Environmental Management Training (SEMT) or Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certification (training will be arranged if required).
•    Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., IExpE, IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered or Incorporated status (or be working towards).

 

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
