The Senior Design Engineer role is based within our Devonport Royal Dockyard business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role

The difference our new Electrical Engineer will make

As a Senior Design Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The primary purpose of the senior electrical design engineer within the Technical Authority is to provide professional and flexible technical support to the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extant electrical systems and equipment. 

Day to day, you will provide technichal support and advice on maintaining the design intent of existing electrical systems and equipment include.

The secondary purpose of the role is to provide support to the Design Consultancy function of the department where the activities are generally focussed on the provision of new, or modification to electrical designs, equipment and facilities as well as injection of new capabilities and undertaking life extensions activities.

This type of work entails the application of the Design & Safety Processes across the design lifecycle (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detail, and Implementation), undertaking a variety of defined activities and deliverables, and following the appropriate levels of technical governance.

Essential experience

•    Comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering principles;
•    Proficient understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations BS7671;
•    Ability to understand and produce electrical engineering drawings;
•    Technical experience of electrical building services systems; 
•    Design engineering experience.
