The Principal Electrical Engineer role is based within our Devonport Royal Dockyard business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role
The difference our new Principal Electrical Engineer will make

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will lead and manage the design of complex electrical systems and equipment to support the delivery of electrical infrastructure for docking a submarine within the dock facility. The facility is being upgraded within a working dockyard and you will be responsible for ensuring proper integration with site wide service distribution.


Day to day, you’ll lead and manage electrical engineering design packages, working closely with other design disciplines to ensure that a coordinated design is delivered. You will also manage deliverables through the technical governance process to ensure quality and consistency. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.


We offer flexible working to give people more options to better integrate their work and personal life, whilst ensuring that business needs are met. This role provides flexibility to work from home but will require the candidate to travel to Devonport approx. once a month.


Essential experience

  • Design of high and low voltage distribution systems
  • Design of control & instrumentation systems
  • Design of Communications and data systems
  • Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Chartered Membership of an appropriate Institution
  • Understanding of the site licence/authorisation conditions
  • Ability to satisfy security requirements, including the potential need for SC clearance
