The role
As an Independent Peer Review Manager, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, within the Assurance Directorate, provides compelling advice and regulatory interface on nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management and assurance of compliance with legal and contractual requirements.

 

Day-to-day, the main core activity of IPR is the examination of the Site Safety Justification i.e., Plant Safety Cases, Modifications, Forward Action Plans (FAPs) and Concessions, against the Company’s safety principles, criteria and standards. The examination can involve checks on a Safety Case’s completeness, logic and methodology.

 

  • To manage IPR Department staff and any external contract staff carrying out review of nuclear safety policy and independent peer review and maintain qualifications and experience records of such SQEPs. To act as the Intelligent Customer for reviews undertaken by contract staff
  • To train and develop the skills of IPR Department staff to ensure that they have the requisite competencies for future corporate needs
  • To ensure peer review methodologies remain consistent with recognised good practice. To promote the Company’s image in external safety fora such as the Safety Directors Forum (SDF) Peer Review Forum
  • To liaise with the INO function in the sharing of regulatory intelligence and to ensure consistent, collaborative programmes that leverage the most effective utilisation of the capability and capacity of both the INO and IPR teams in providing a challenge function to the Business
  • Recommend changes and corrective actions that will improve the company’s performance in compliance with the Nuclear Site Licence, and MoD Authorisation

 

This role is full time, 36 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with approximately 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home. 

 

Essential experience of the Independent Peer Review Manager

  • The IPRM must have extensive relevant, professional industrial experience and preferably well-developed recent experience in the nuclear safety field
  • General experience of safety related engineering in a high hazard industry. A thorough understanding of Naval Base infrastructure with a detailed understanding of submarine engineering
  • Significant experience in the conduct of safety analysis, ideally in a through life support environment
  • Knowledge of probabilistic and deterministic safety assessment, management and analysis of fault schedules and derivation of safety functional requirements
  • Understanding the principles of safety case claims, arguments and evidence to demonstrate how risks are managed and controlled

 

Qualifications for the Independent Peer Review Manager

  • Level 6 STEM qualification, or L5 qualification with substantial relevant experience
  • Chartered Member of an Engineering, Scientific or Environmental Professional Institution
  • NUC0793 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent) (Babcock are happy to put you through this)
  • NUC0794 Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent) (Babcock are happy to put you through this)
  • NUC0911 Introduction to Safety Engineering (Babcock are happy to put you through this)

 

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
