The Electrical Design Engineer role is based within our Devonport Royal Dockyard business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role

 

The difference our new Electrical Design Engineer will make
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary where you will have the opportunity to work on building services within a range of different facilities from simple office space to nuclear radiological plant rooms.


Day to day, you’ll provide professional and flexible technical support to the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extant electrical building services systems and equipment. 

 

The provision of technical support and advice on maintaining the design intent of existing electrical systems and equipment include:

•    Periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities
•    Specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications
•    Maintaining configuration of technical drawings and documentation
•    Responding to formal Technical Queries
•    Undertaking asset condition and obsolescence studies
•    Supporting fault diagnosis and rectification
 
The secondary purpose of the role is to provide support to the Design Consultancy function of the department where the activities are generally focussed on the provision of new, or modification to electrical building services. 

 

This type of work entails the application of the Design & Safety Processes across the design lifecycle (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detail, and Implementation), undertaking a variety of defined activities and deliverables, and following the appropriate levels of technical governance. 

 

The deliverables and support required includes:
•    Capturing requirements
•    Design development 
•    Specification writing
•    Producing commissioning documentation
•    Managing technical queries and design deviations
•    Providing support to implementation phase

Essential experience

•    A minimum of HNC or equivalent in an Electrical/Electronic Engineering discipline
•    Comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering principles
•    Proficient understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations BS7671
•    Ability to understand and produce electrical engineering drawings
•    Technical experience of electrical building services systems
•    Design engineering experience
•    You will need to satisfy security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
