About the role 

The SSBN Procedure Authorisation Group is part of the 9 Dock Plant Management Group within the Nuclear Operations Directorate. As the deputy SSBN PAG Chair you will be a Duly Appointed Person and will be critical to the delivery of arrangements intended to ensure compliance with Site Licence Conditions. As a consequence of the role demanding a high level of suitable nuclear qualifications and experience and therefore suitable candidates should have a background predominantly in Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) management, operations and maintenance.

They must act with integrity at all times and have a proven record of good leadership and management skills within a safety focused environment. They must work well with both internal and external stakeholders, with good communication skills and a questioning attitude.

The right candidate will have a thorough understanding of the ALARP principle and be able to demonstrate how it is applied to Submarine refitting.  As a deputy PAG Chair they must demonstrate a positive Safety culture, via an appropriate questioning attitude to the safety, health and environmental aspects of work activities (either existing in the work environment or created by work processes).

They will need to establish habits of excellence for all personnel involved in the production and execution of Nuclear Procedures through employee engagement and development. 

They must have an understanding of the production and implementation of Plant Safety Cases including the change request process.

In order to meet the challenges of the future it is essential that the right candidate is pro-active and forward thinking and that they can identify and implement enhancements to business processes in order to deliver improvements.

The role requires that individuals make themselves available out of working hours to manage set piece major trials, to respond to Coordinators queries as issues arise and provide professional/technical advice or support as necessary.  

This may require a defined level of out of hours coverage, including weekends, response to phone calls out of hours and as the situation requires attendance on site.

What do I need to do the role?

To be successful in role, you will need to have prior knowledge of the refitting of nuclear submarines, knowledge of safety case development and implementation on a nuclear site. You will need to have:

Essential

Academic Qualifications
•    Suitable degree in Engineering or Science 
OR
•    Level 5, Foundation Degree or HND in Engineering or Science (with significant experience as detailed below)

Professional Qualifications

•    Dockyard Nuclear Systems Course (or CAT A1/A2 qualification)
•    Nuclear Warship Support Course or STS modules 1 – 4 (or CAT A1/A2 qualification)
 

Experience

•    NSRP Experience – Maintenance, operation and management of NSRP systems (For example Royal Navy Cat A1/A2 qualification or RTG/DTO experience).
 

Skills

•    Good Leadership and Management skills 
•    Good Communication and Interpersonal Skills
•    Understanding of the principle of ALARP 
•    Works well with both internal and external stakeholders
•    Understanding of the production and implementation of Plant Safety Cases
 

Desirable

Vocational Courses

•    Submarine Quality Assurance Course
•    DAP/ASQEP Course

Professional Qualifications

•    Incorporated Engineer

A working knowledge of the use of MS Office Suite including (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and MS Outlook), MS Viso and AutoCAD 2012 would be an advantage.

Grade

This position is within the Submarines business unit as a PC with DRDL Terms and Conditions.

Business Area - Devonport

Babcock International Group owns and operates the main refit, maintenance and workshop area of the 330 acre naval site at Devonport, known as Devonport Royal Dockyard, where it employs thousands of people.
