The role
As a Confined Space Controller, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a critical role to ensure safe systems of work are adhered to and ensuring all confined spaces are safe to work in and all risks are mitigated.

 

Day-to-day, you’ll play an integral part of the control of tanks and confined spaces on submarine platforms and Nuclear facilities at Devonport Royal Dockyard. You will interact with sub-contractors, ship staff and Production teams to provide advice, ensure adequate controls are in place and ultimately permission and record all aspects of work within confined spaces.

 

  • Acting as focal point for all confined space work activities within area of responsibility.
  • Ensuring that the confined Spaces Safe System of Work (SSoW) is in place, maintained and complied with, Issue Permit to Works (PTW) for Confined Spaces.
  • Ensuring correct, valid entry certificates or tags for confined spaces are in place and displayed correctly within confined space entry boards.
  • Ensuring all services are suitable and adequate for the task they have been requested for. i.e. ventilation and lights.
  • Ensuring atmospheric testing of a confined space has been carried out and a valid clearance certificate has been issued by a competent analyst prior to authorisation of work in the space.

 

This position involves working in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work comfortably and perform tasks in restricted spaces. 

 

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

 

Essential experience of the Confined Space Controller:

  • Proven experience in the creation and maintenance of activity records 
  • A basic knowledge/understanding of Health and Safety 
  • Knowledge and experience of working in tanks and confined spaces – beneficial
  • Knowledge and experience of running a Safe System of Work (SSoW) – beneficial 
  • Sound and demonstrable knowledge of confined space control requirements and standards – beneficial 

 

Qualifications for the Confined Space Controller:

 

All qualifications are desirable and not essential as training will be provided. 

  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • Risk Assessor.
  • City and Guilds Level 2 Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces.
  • OPITO Level 1 Authorised Gas Tester (AGT).
  • Management and Supervision of Work in Confined Spaces.

 

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
