At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and we're looking for talented Civil Engineers to join us. We’re working on a major £1 billion nuclear construction portfolio to modernise HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe. This exciting 10-year project aims to consolidate and modernise maintenance capabilities in support of Royal Navy ships and submarines.

Although the work is based at HMNB Devonport (also known as Devonport Royal Dockyard) wherever you’re based in the UK, there's a place for your expertise. Early-stage design work can be supported by fully remote working, however as work progresses through the project phases towards implementation increased attendance will be required on site.

Civil Engineer Opportunities
We have opportunities for Civil Engineers to work on a wide range of critical infrastructure projects - both inside and outside the nuclear-licensed site. This will involve not only updates and upgrades to existing facilities but also constructing entirely new infrastructure. For most projects Babcock acts as the intelligent customer, supporting and undertaking the development of designs, accepting design house solutions, and overseeing construction works.

Devonport's vast 3.5-mile waterfront presents a major civil engineering portfolio within an architecturally significant site with unique challenges combining the old with the new. The site is home to numerous large structures, its own power generation and utility networks, docks, and berths, all within an operational naval base. Construction must seamlessly integrate with ongoing activities while respecting the site's heritage. We’ll achieve this through a thoughtful approach that blends modern elements with Devonport's legacy.

Looking towards the future, Babcock is committed to increasing sustainability and reducing carbon as we drive towards Net Zero. Our new buildings target Excellent ratings under DREAM and BREEAM environmental standards, aligning with the needs of our business, clients, and employees. We further optimise project efficiency by utilizing Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other digital tools.

What do I need?
We value diversity and don’t have a fixed idea when it comes to background or education, provided you can show the required level of experience within your field of expertise then we would like to hear from you. Most of our projects are waterfront based, with opportunities to work within the following areas/disciplines:

  • Ground works
  • Concrete and steel framed structures
  • Maritime and port interfaces
  • Roadways
  • Surface and Foul Water Drainage
  • Mechanical and Electrical Services
  • Buildings
  • Construction Management
  • Quality Assurance and Control
  • Clerk of Works
  • Site Engineers
