The role
As an Assistant Chief Engineer - Submarine Combat Systems, you’ll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll support submarine engineering projects including maintenance periods, refits and major equipment support and upgrades. This is an exciting opportunity for an established Engineering Leader in this or a related field to assume a key role in Babcock's contribution to the Submarine Enterprise. You will directly contribute to sustaining engineering support to Naval Operations and the provision of safe, available and capable submarines.
Day-to-day, you’ll provide critical engineering oversight, guidance and direction for the Combat Systems elements of our submarine maintenance, repair and operational support activity for the Royal Navy.
Key activities include:
- Working collaboratively with the MoD customer within the Submarine Delivery Agency, and with other Industry Partners, to understand, optimise and enable the Design Authority requirements for engineering support to submarine Combat Systems.
- Providing assurance and oversight to submarine maintenance projects, by reviewing Design Authority Requirements, understanding interdependencies, identifying and managing risks and opportunities.
- Supporting the Office of the Chief Engineer and the Whole Boat Technical Authority and contributing to internal assurance for Babcock engineering activity in the field of SM Combat System Engineering.
- Capability sustainment for this specialist domain such that engineering activity on submarine combat systems is supported by suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
- To act as an internal Babcock Subject Matter Expert on Submarine Combat Systems, providing advice, facilitating coherent information exchange, and conducting independent technical reviews.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 2 days in the office/onsite per week. The option of a 9 day fortnight is also available.
Essential experience of the Assistant Chief Engineer - Submarine Combat Systems:
- Deep knowledge of submarine engineering, combat systems and the design change management process.
- Experience in MoD customer-facing roles and ability to communicate across all levels of stakeholders.
- Demonstrable experience of engineering projects and identifying and overcoming engineering challenges.
- Significant technical and management experience and knowledge.
- Experience with technical investigations, reviews and assessments.
- Demonstrable experience in generating, writing and reviewing complex engineering reports.
Qualifications for the Assistant Chief Engineer - Submarine Combat Systems:
- You'll need a first degree in an engineering or science discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution (i.e. IET, IMechE etc.).
- Chartered Engineer status, or working towards it.
