The role

As an Assistant Calibration Engineer, you’ll be central to delivering the accuracy, precision and reliability that underpin Babcock’s work across defence, engineering and fleet support.

 

Day-to-day, you’ll work with a broad mix of instruments, apply high‑accuracy measurement practices and support the ongoing development of calibration methods and documentation. It’s a fantastic opportunity to grow your expertise in a specialist field while contributing to the safety and performance of assets vital to national defence.

   

  • Calibration, of a broad range of General-Purpose Test and Measurement Equipment. This includes items ranging from 3 phase Switch Board instrumentation, EHT measurement up to 50kV, through to specialist RF and µWave test equipment.  For which Calibration Certificates and or Reports for work undertaken, are produced.
  • Undertake electrical safety test and inspection such as Portable Appliance Testing, of Client owned and Calibration Facility Test Measurement and Supporting Equipment.
  • You will also be expected to develop your competency within the role to aspire to become a Calibration engineer, with a view to becoming a recognised signatory in the field of either DC/LF or RF & µWave measurement, as required to maintain ongoing UKAS accreditation.
  • Prepare accurate calibration certificates and reports for completed work.
  • Support and demonstrate facility compliance with BS EN ISO 17025 and BS EN 10012 standards.

 

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

 

Essential experience of the Assistant Calibration Engineer

  • Strong background in high‑accuracy measurement within a quality‑driven environment.
  • Knowledge of BS EN ISO 17025 requirements and UKAS accreditation processes.
  • Skilled in developing and maintaining calibration procedures, documentation and uncertainty budgets.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, customer‑focused approach, and high proficiency with IT systems and digital workflows.

 

Qualifications for the Assistant Calibration Engineer

  •  NVQ3 or equivalent in an engineering discipline; an apprenticeship is preferred

 

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) security clearance for this role.
