The role

As a Senior Safety Case Engineer – Weapons, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll lead the development of new and operational safety cases in a high‑hazard environment, shaping decisions that keep people safe and assets mission‑ready. It’s work with real‑world impact - directly supporting UK national security while accelerating your professional growth across complex, regulated safety domains. This role sits within our Naval Nuclear business at HMNB Clyde, where Babcock delivers specialist engineering support in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy.

 

Day‑to‑day you’ll be required to:

 

  • Lead and develop a team of safety case engineers, coaching toward SQEP status across multiple safety domains.
  • Produce, review and assure high‑quality safety documentation and professional engineering reports.
  • Maintain compliance with site authorisation conditions across Nuclear Reactor Plant, nuclear weapons, and Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives.
  • Engage and influence stakeholders, including the Ministry of Defence customer, facility operators and industry partners (e.g., Rolls‑Royce, AWE).
  • Explain complex technical issues clearly to varied audiences and drive informed decision‑making.

 

This role is full time, 36 hours per week Monday to Thursday 07:15 – 16:45 and provides hybrid working arrangements.

 

Essential experience of the Senior Safety Case Engineer – Weapons

  • Safety case experience in a regulated or safety‑critical environment.
  • Experience producing and reviewing professional engineering reports.
  • Familiarity with safety case methodologies and justification approaches.
  • Exposure to nuclear reactor plant and/or warhead environments.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues to different audiences.

 

Qualifications for the Senior Safety Case Engineer – Weapons

  • HNC/HND in Engineering or a relevant STEM degree.
  • Professional registration with a relevant institution or working towards it.
  • Evidence of continued professional development in nuclear or weapons safety – Desirable
  • Experience collaborating with government or defence stakeholders – Desirable

 

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance for this role.
