At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us as a Weapons and Complex Systems Director, you will be part of a senior leadership team within our Naval Nuclear Business helping to make this happen, based at one of our key sites at Devonport Royal Dockyard or Babcock Technology Centre.
The role
As a Weapons and Complex Systems Director, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is an exciting opportunity for an established Engineering Leader to assume a key role in Babcock's contribution to the submarine enterprise. You will directly contribute to sustaining engineering support to Naval operations and the provision of safe, available and capable submarines.
Day-to-day, you’ll provide critical leadership and engineering oversight, guidance and direction for the weapons and complex systems teams within our submarine support engineering activity which helps to provide capable and available submarines for the Royal Navy.
Key activities include:
- Working with the MoD customers within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) to deliver the Major Systems Approval Authority requirements for engineering support to deployed submarine weapons and complex systems to time, cost and quality
- Maintaining a strong relationship with our customer and Industry Partners in the weapons system enterprises
- As a member of the Naval Nuclear Senior Leadership Team, helping to drive the business forward in the broadest sense, managing personnel, finance and commercial agendas
- Providing the requisite engineering capability to enable individual submarine maintenance projects
- Ensuring capability sustainment for these specialist domains such that engineering activity on submarine weapons and complex systems is conducted by suitably qualified and experienced personnel
- Identifying new initiatives to provide future engineering support for the SDA’s mission
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with an expectation of at least two days in the office environment.
Essential experience of the Director Submarine Weapons and Complex Systems
- Experience in the senior leadership of engineering teams within a suitably related discipline
- Strong experience of leading, training and mentoring engineering teams and/or as a Project Lead Engineer
- Demonstrable experience within engineering projects and overcoming engineering challenges
- Experience in developing engineering capability
- Experience of engineering governance and assurance
- Sufficient experience of the broader wider business elements such as commercial, financial and procurement
Qualifications for the Director Submarine Weapons and Complex Systems
- Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience
- Membership of a relevant professional institution (i.e. IET, IMechE etc.)
- Chartered Engineer status

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
