The role
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be part of our ME&S business unit who are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. ME&S Engineering have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.
Day to day, you’ll be responsible for authoring, reviewing and substantiating Marine and Mechanical designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You’ll be required to contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.
- Primary deliverables are substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions; this can include development/analysis and/or verification/validation of Power and Propulsion designs, development of Auxiliary Ship Systems and/or HVAC for existing and new build/concept designs.
- Preparation and production of substantiation reports for solutions during the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
- Lead design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews, and act as Technical Authorities within their area of expertise.
- Develop innovative design solutions with robust engineering substantiation.
- Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.
- Produce, approve and authorise technical reports and other documentation.
- Be aware of and ensure that, health, safety and environmental requirements are implemented.
- Assist with the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs.
- Provide mentoring support to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their professional development.
Essential experience of the Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- The PME is required to have a high level of developed knowledge, the role is directly accountable for design development, and determines solutions to problems and issues within their specialist subject area.
- Provides help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development. Although not essential, defence related design experience and demonstrable experience in appropriate analytical software such as FEA, CFD and/or CAD would be an advantage, as would experience of Power and Propulsion systems, Auxiliary Systems and HVAC.
The role is full time, 37-hours per week, with a flexible, hybrid working arrangement. Typically, you will be required to be on site two days per week however this can fluctuate depending on business needs.
Qualifications for the Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered.
The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to achieve SC security clearance.
