As a Principal Marine Systems Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will deliver advice, solve problems and maintain safety for Royal Naval Marine Engineers deployed around the globe. 

 

You will act as the focal point for business growth and transformation activity within Systems and Equipment Technical Services. Supporting our strategy for developing Systems and Equipment support to the Royal Navy and delivering on our current commitments to maintain safety, reliability and availability to enable naval operations worldwide.

 

Day-to-day, you will lead the planning, support and delivery of the technical aspects of the marine systems and equipment growth and transformation activity within the Support Value Stream. You will provide a level of technical leadership in support of engineering demands from the Royal Navy community, answering technical queries and suggesting solutions to shortcomings in design and documentation. 

 

You will deputise for the Technical Support Manager (Hub) in their absence. Capture and integrate the technical requirements, preparing a forward plan of growth and transformation activity for Systems and Equipment Technical Services. You will manage and coordinate bids, transformation and continual improvement activities, working with Head of Technical Services executing optimised resource plans.

 

You will provide technical knowledge and expertise into Systems and Equipment Business Growth activities. Identify opportunities for improvements to the service and outputs. Act as a mentor for junior engineering staff and engage with line management for personal development of the engineering cadre.

 

You will evaluate complex engineering technical issues and, through the application of sound engineering principles, make technical recommendations to the Chief Engineers through the provision of authoritative evidence that demonstrates that the system design intent has been achieved. You will support design and safety reviews in order to identify technical and safety risks through the application of appropriate design and safety analysis. 

 

You will be working as part of a small, but highly effective team where the highest of standards will be expected from both a technical and behavioural perspective. The role reports to a Technical Support Manager and you will be given responsibility for the management of your own technical work packages.

Essential experience

 

  • Degree qualified in an Engineering discipline
  • Member of a relevant institution and hold Chartered Engineer status
  • Experience from a marine or defence environment would be beneficial
  • Experience of successfully delivering bids, from customer strategy, through PQQ and ITT
  • Experience in managing an engineering team
  • Experience of the engineering design, or support of, complex engineering systems or equipment, ideally Naval
  • A proven ability to work in a collaborative manner across a multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders
  • Experience in Operating, Maintaining, Diagnosing and Repairing (ODMR) complex warships is desirable
