Principal Marine Systems Engineer

About the role
We’re looking for a Principal Marine Systems Engineer to join our Engineering team in Bristol to deliver advice, solve problems and maintain safety for Royal Naval Marine Engineers deployed around the globe.

 

An opportunity has arisen to join our engineering team who deliver technical advice and support to the Royal Navy, specifically the Type 45 destroyer and the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) aircraft carrier. This role will also act as the focal point for business growth and transformation activity within Systems and Equipment Technical Services.
The successful candidate will be a strong problem solver and clear communicator who can interpret customer requirements, undertake complex technical investigations and lead the development and delivery of engineering support activity.

 

The Principal Marine Systems Engineer role

In this role, you will provide technical leadership in support of engineering demands from the T45 and QEC community, answering technical queries and suggesting solutions to shortcomings in design and documentation. Additionally the role holder will be the lead co-ordinator in planning, supporting and delivering the technical aspects of the marine systems and equipment growth and transformation activity within the Support Value Stream. The successful applicant will be able to:
•    Deputise for Technical Support Manager (Hub) in their absence
•    Carry out complicated technical investigations and analyses, including evaluation and selection of technical options, preparing reports with recommended courses of action as required by the MSSP Chief Engineers
•    Capture and integrate the Marine Systems and Equipment technical requirements of the Support Value Stream growth and transformation strategy and agenda, preparing a forward plan of growth and transformation activity for Systems and Equipment Technical Services.
•    Manage and coordinate Systems and Equipment Engineering Support to bids, transformation and continual improvement activity, working with Head of Technical Services executing optimised resource plans.
•    Provide technical knowledge and expertise into Systems and Equipment Business Growth activities.
•    Evaluate complex engineering technical issues and, through the application of systems engineering principles, make technical recommendations to the MSSP Chief Engineers through the provision of authoritative evidence that demonstrates that the system design intent has been achieved
•    Conduct advanced level impact assessments of proposed changes to maintenance, technical documentation and broader Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) functions of in-scope Marine Systems
•    Support design and safety reviews in order to identify technical and safety risks through the application of appropriate design and safety analysis
•    Provide support to the MSSP safety function for the management safety risks
•    Provide technical inputs into ad-hoc Technical Approval Forms (TAFs) covering services where MSSP Suitably Qualified Experienced Personnel (SQEP) capabilities have been totally exhausted
•    Liaise with all Technical Services functions to ensure that cross-system integration issues and safety aspects of technical tasks are addressed
•    Act as a mentor for junior engineering staff and engage with line management for personal development of the engineering cadre
•    Provide management information as required
•    Identify opportunities for improvements to the Marine Systems and Equipment Support Engineering service and outputs.
•    Comply with the Company safety rules and regulations or local procedures and any Company initiatives to improve safety

 

You will be working as part of a small, but highly effective team where the highest of standards will be expected from both a technical and behavioural perspective. The role reports to a Technical Support Manager and you will be given responsibility for the management of your own technical work packages.

What do I need to do the role?

 

Experience

•    Experience in managing an engineering team.
•    Experience of successfully delivering bids, from customer strategy, through PQQ and ITT.
•    Experience of the engineering design, or support of, complex engineering systems or equipment, ideally Naval.
•    A proven ability to work in a collaborative manner across a multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders.
•    (Desirable) Experience in Operating, Maintaining, Diagnosing and Repairing (ODMR) complex warships.

 

Skills and attributes

•    An effective decision maker who can understand complex issues (balancing the detail and the big picture), using insight / evidence and their judgement to deliver great results in a timely manner
•    Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to elicit customer requirements, understand the issues and develop technical recommendations
•    A self-starter, who is performance driven with a desire to make significant contribution/impact. Is able to work independently and as an active team member

 

Competencies

•    Knowledge of systems engineering principles, their application to systems of systems and the management of system requirements with the ability to deploy best practice methods and tools when addressing any given problem.
•    A broad understanding of the management of wider project considerations including programme, commercial and financial constraints
•    An understanding of design intent and engineering governance, their application to the requirements of a project and the role of both legislative requirements and internal management processes.
•    Knowledge of safety and environmental engineering, both legislative and safety and engineering management processes


Education and qualifications
•    Degree qualified and a Chartered Engineer or having demonstrable equivalent experience.
