The role

As a Junior Data Engineer, you’ll help design, build and enhance the data capabilities that underpin critical decision‑making across defence, aerospace and engineering programmes.

 

You’ll join a large, collaborative Data Engineering team and work alongside dashboard developers, analysts, testers and project managers throughout the software development lifecycle. This role offers an excellent platform for professional growth from modern cloud technologies to emerging AI and machine learning initiatives giving you the skills and experience to progress your career in a fast‑evolving data landscape.

 

Day-to-day, you’ll work with rich, complex datasets drawn from a diverse range of sources, contributing directly to systems and solutions that help protect people, strengthen national resilience and support operational excellence.

 

  • Develop and maintain ETL/ELT data pipelines that support business‑critical processes.
  • Build, enhance and administer relational databases used across the organisation.
  • Contribute to on‑premise and cloud data platforms, including Azure‑based solutions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality technical solutions.
  • Support the preparation of AI‑ready datasets and contribute to early AI/ML initiatives.

 

This role is full time, 37.5 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with days onsite and days working from home.

 

Essential experience of the Junior Data Engineer

  • Working with MS SQL Server BI Stack (e.g., SSIS) or an equivalent ETL/ELT tool.
  • Experience with Python and T‑SQL.
  • Administration and development of relational databases.
  • Understanding of dimensional modelling and data warehousing methodologies.
  • Exposure to, or strong motivation to learn, cloud technologies such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Microsoft Fabric or Azure Databricks.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) / Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.  Must be a British National / Passport Holder.
