This is a great opportunity to make an immediate impact by leading our Project Management and Controls Discipline, supporting delivery, improvement and growth across Mission Systems by integrating and optimising operational planning, process, assurance and governance.

 

The difference our new Head of Project Management will make

 

For this significant leadership role, reporting directly to the Managing Director of Mission Systems, we are seeking a Head of Project Management and Controls to lead the Discipline. This includes, but is not limited to governance, integrated resource planning, best practice implementation, career development of professional Project Managers and Project Controllers, tools and process optimisation, as well as acting as a key individual in our Matrix Leadership Team.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Establishing a community with a positive culture, whereby everyone lives by the Babcock principles.
  • Leading the Discipline within Babcock Mission Systems.
  • Generating and leading a pipeline of suitably qualified and experienced people at all levels of Project Management and Project Controls for Mission Systems.
  • Ensuring that Group PM policies are rolled out within Mission Systems by collaborating with others from the PM Discipline across the Babcock Group.
  • Embed the Group Project Management BMS framework, tailoring where necessary to enable successful delivery of portfolios, programmes and projects.
  • Carry out independent Assurance and Governance to confirm consistent application of the Group PM framework and provide senior stakeholders feedback, and support on corrective actions, to ensure confidence in delivery.
  • Championing best practice across the PM Discipline, instilling standardisation and common use of frameworks.
  • Collaborating with sub-discipline leads to ensure the supply of PM resource is balanced with the demand from our contracts and pipeline.
  • Collaborating with Discipline Leads to agree resourcing decision prioritisation and solving day-to-day risks and issues.

Experience

 

  • Broad experience of Project Management and Controls techniques, including Agile, planning and scheduling, estimating, risk management, cost forecasting, EVM, SRA.
  • Experienced in establishing a Project Management Discipline within a large organisation.
  • Leadership within a Matrix organisation.
  • Comprehensive experience of delivering Projects and Programmes for large and technically complex equipment/system contracts, preferably for MoD and commercial customers (both UK and international).
  • Significant experience as a Project Contoller / Project Manager / Programme Manager.
  • Experience in managing multiple change projects, including developing and implementing business cases, delivery plans and growth strategies.
  • Well rounded Commercial and Legal awareness.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to interact successfully at all levels.
  • Domain knowledge in, and experience of, delivering Project and Production output for complex defence assets and systems to UK and International customers is desirable.
  • Proficient with MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Project desirable.
  • Experience of Babcock Finance and ERP systems, including IFS (or similar) is desirable.

 

Education and qualifications

 

  • Degree or equivalent qualification / experience in Project Management or an appropriate production, engineering or management discipline.
  • Holds, or capable of achieving, Chartered Project Professional registration or equivalent.
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety or equivalent (desirable).
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent (desirable).
