The role
As an Engineering Director, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Director to lead the Engineering discipline in the UK Land Sector, delivering engineering in support of a wide range of Land programmes including protected vehicle modifications and through-life support.
Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for the engineering team delivering critical capabilities to our customers. You will shape technology development that leads to profitable future growth for the business while contributing to the leadership of the Land Sector as part of the Land Senior Leadership Team.
In this role you’ll be accountable for the technical construct of Land Sector products and services, spanning an exciting range of markets and capabilities that include special purpose vehicles for security and military markets, equipment support, mission-critical training, rail systems and aviation related service delivery.
- Leadership and Strategy - Own overall responsibility for designing, developing, and delivering UK Land engineering strategy and outcomes in support of the global engineering and Technology strategy and the Land business strategy.
- Technical Delivery – Through independent technical oversight and through the provision of Suitably Qualified and Experience Person (SQEP) technical teams, support the delivery leads in enabling them to deliver high integrity products and services to customers and maximising shareholder value.
- Budgeting and Business Planning – Ensure the discipline has stretching and deliverable budgets that will equip the development of staff and tools (both short term and long term), whilst maintaining rates at a competitive level.
- Organisational Capability Building and Transformation – Identify the technical capabilities needed to meet the current and emerging business needs; identify gaps and prioritise development and transformation activities.
- Technical Governance – Own overall responsibility for Technical Governance for the UK Land Sector, ensuring assurance of key projects and bids to appropriately manage risk, interfacing with the Group Engineering & Technology Function to ensure appropriate levels of independence are applied. Ensure deliverability of all key projects and bids from a technical perspective, including resourcing, capability, transformation and facilities.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week and requires regular travel across a range of Land sites on a weekly basis alongside home working arrangements.
Essential experience of the Engineering Director:
- Significant relevant experience and subject matter expertise within a large, complex, global organisation
- A strong track record of technical leadership in complex organisations, and evidence of the ability to operate as a key part of a strategic leadership team
- A strategic thinker, with the ability to see ahead to future possibilities
- The ability to work effectively and collaboratively with senior stakeholders, across borders
- The ability to lead diverse functional teams, demonstrating strong operational and line management capability and the ability to motivate and develop high performing teams
