Our 5-year Electro-Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship offers the chance to earn a degree while developing real-world skills with experienced engineers on projects that make a difference. You’ll support complex defence programmes and help us create a safer, more secure world.

About the programme

You’ll start by shadowing engineers to develop a solid understanding of a Design Engineer’s role and its application to naval and defence engineering. As your knowledge grows, you’ll begin contributing directly to exciting projects like Launch Control Systems, Research & Development, and In-Service Support.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop crucial skills in electrical and mechanical design, requirements definition, use of test equipment and hand tools, and more. You’ll gradually take on more responsibility, supported every step of the way by your team and mentor.

Whether you're problem-solving with colleagues or applying theory to practice, , you'll build your skills while contributing to meaningful projects.

Your education/training

You’ll complete a BEng (Hons) in Electro-Mechanical Engineering with University Centre Weston, delivered in partnership with UWE Bristol, as part of your apprenticeship.

  • Year 1: Full-time training with the training provider.
  • Years 2 to 4: Day-release study with the training provider combined with practical experience in your role at Babcock.
  • Final year: Completion of your End-Point Assessment (EPA) and transition into a substantive role within the business.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop the technical knowledge, professional skills, and industry experience needed to succeed in your engineering career.

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you'll have the opportunity to move into a substantive role, typically as an Assistant Engineer or Engineer within one of our engineering disciplines.

Apprentices who complete the programme can expect a competitive starting salary, alongside opportunities to pursue professional registration and chartership, supported by experienced mentors and industry professionals.

As a global organisation, Babcock offers a wide range of opportunities to develop your skills and progress your career. Through our Babcock Role Framework, you'll have visibility of potential career pathways and development opportunities, helping you shape your progression and achieve your long-term career goals.
