The role
As the Chief Engineer – Communication Systems, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary.  As a senior member of the engineering discipline, collaboration and working in partnership comes naturally. Day to day, you will be porting to the Head of Technology Delivery and working alongside the Focus Area Lead, you will be providing technical leadership, independent technical oversight and subject matter expertise to the Strategic Communications engineering teams to develop new, and support in-service, Radio and Satellite Communications systems for Defence customers in the UK and overseas


Key responsibilities and accountabilities will include:

 

  • Providing governance and oversight of the technical work of the Strategic Communications engineering teams, to ensure that our technical output is optimally compliant to customer requirements.
  • Ensuring that the appropriate level of independent assurance is applied to the technical output, including chairing design reviews and conducting independent review of deliverables.
  • Helping to grow the Strategic Communications business through supporting bids and business development activity and representing Babcock in external meetings related to a range of communications systems including Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) High Frequency (HF) and Satellite Communications (SATCOM).
  • Providing subject matter expertise in the areas of communication systems and network design and support
  • Ensuring technical risks and issues are being appropriately managed and mitigated.
  • Ensuring that our strategic communications solutions are safe to build, commission and operate by our suppliers, customers and end users.
  • Optimising and refining the engineering processes to ensure exceptional products and services to our customers.
  • Assisting with the recruitment, mentoring and developing engineering talent within the Communications engineering domain.

 

This role is a full-time, permanent position 37-hours per week and can be based at various sites, including Bristol, Devonport, Ashchurch, Harrogate or Cumbria. The successful candidate can work from any of the mentioned Babcock sites 1-2 days per week with hybrid working from home arrangements. 

 

Essential experience of the Assistant Chief Engineer – Communication Systems

  • Significant experience and subject matter expertise in end-to-end, strategic communication systems, including the development of new solutions using a formal system engineering approach.
  • Experience of strategic military RF communication systems and/or military SATCOM systems is preferable.
  • Experience of overseeing the technical work of others, including reviewing designs and documentation, and authorising the release of deliverables.
  • Experience of holding a technical or design authority role for a complex communication system
  • Demonstrable experience of engineering delivery on large and/or complex engineering projects
  • Experience of delivering service-based contracts to the Ministry of Defence
  • Problem solving capability and the ability to simplify, prioritise, and resolve issues, using data as well as good judgement. 
  • Able to communicate complex concepts and technologies, clearly and digestibly, to non-specialists, from the most junior colleague to the most senior Customer.

 

Qualifications for the Assistant Chief Engineer – Communication Systems

  • You will be degree educated or equivalent professional engineering qualifications and either hold Chartership status or work towards Chartership status 

 

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC and potentially Developed Vetting security clearance for this role.
