Babcock is looking for a Technical Author to join the Technical Services team based in Devonport, Auckland.
About the role
Play a critical role in keeping the Royal New Zealand Navy operational, safe, and mission‑ready. As a Technical Author, you will transform complex engineering and OEM information into clear, practical Work Instructions that directly enable maintenance activity across the RNZN Fleet. Your work will underpin asset reliability, safety, and maritime compliance in a defence environment where quality and precision truly matter.
Working alongside engineers, planners, and ship’s staff, you will be trusted as the link between technical knowledge and real‑world execution. You will contribute to continuous improvement, shape documentation standards, and help ensure maintenance is delivered efficiently, safely, and to the highest professional standard. About you
You are an analytical, detail‑focused Technical Author with defence or maritime experience. You enjoy working with engineers and subject matter experts and are confident translating complex technical information into clear, user‑friendly documentation. You value quality, safety, and compliance, and take pride in producing work that supports real‑world maintenance outcomes. You work well in structured environments, embrace continuous improvement, and understand the importance of accuracy in mission‑critical documentation.
Key Required Skills
• Technical writing for maintenance documentation
• Interpreting engineering and OEM documentation
• Familiar with maintenance applications and systems
• Stakeholder and SME collaboration
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills
• Document review and quality assurance
• Microsoft Office suite, in particular Word and Excel
• Safety and compliance awareness (HSE, maritime)
Key Required Qualifications
• Degree or Diploma in Marine, Mechanical, Electrical, or Structural Engineering, or relevant marine trade qualification
• Minimum two years’ defence maritime technical writing experience
• Eligibility to obtain NZ Defence Security Clearance
